This is an insightful, original and entertaining study of Chinese martial artists, youth culture and popular culture. The research for the book was completed in British-ruled Hong Kong, and in neighboring Guangzhou, then just emerging from the Cultural Revolution. The author, one of the first U.S. ethnographers to do field research in the People's Republic of China, made the most of his time there. The book is widely cited around the world for its analysis of youth culture, Chinese martial artists and popular Chinese culture.
