This is a fantastic book of real photos and real occurrences that reports were actually filed about these happening outside and around Cascades County (Great Falls, MT) this is no made up stuff and the author keeps you hanging onto your seat through the entire book. About the time you think it can't get any spookier, here she comes again with an even creeper story with the photos to prove the truth. At the time of the first publishing there was rumor that the US govt did not want this book published. Well it got published anyway and I am so glad It did. If you can find a copy it is well worth the price and the read is fantastic.

Maybe we can get it republished so more people can read this exciting book of real strange stuff going on in Central MT in the 1970's and still today it continues to go on. . .

Only read this book "after" experiencing similar mutilation incident in the Bitterroot Valley, south of Missoula, Mt in October, 1976. Hadn't ever thought about such matters, but when my wife & I came upon a 7-800lb yearling heifer that's had it's entire reproductive track right up to it's tail, along with it's lips/tongue , all removed, silently, during the dead of night, and it's laying out in a pasture only 300 feet from your house it tends to make a believer out of you. In addition, there were only "3" small drops of blood on "a" leaf, no signs of a struggle, no tire tracks etc. Predators? No way as the cutting looked surgically done, with a laser like device, which in 1976, wasn't common. So later, when we read the book, we believed every word! We sent photos to the Sheriff mentioned in the book to let him know it was happening elsewhere in Montana too. Still have the photos. Scary stuff.

Mystery Stalks the Prairie is an outstanding piece of investigative journalism. The author was a former reporter and edited the Lewistown (Montana) News-Argus for twelve years. She was assisted by a Captain in the Cascade County Sheriff's Posse.

Clearly, many hours went into the research and writing of this book. Every angle behind the mutilations is considered. There are eighteen colour photos of mutilated animals, plus a sketch of a UFO observed and photo of a plaster-cast of a monster's footprint.

Descriptions of the various helicopters/UFOs observed by ranchers and residents are included, plus details of activity of these craft over the various missile sites in the area, e.g. Malmstrom base.

At the time this book was published, it was fashionable to consider that UFOs were somehow intangible, of the same type of phenomena as fairies and elves. This book demolishes such notions. The abundance of UFO sightings and mystery helicopters near sites where there were mutilations indicates that there is a correlation, as the mutilated animals were often discovered the morning after UFO activity had been observed in the areas of the mutilations. In one instance, details are provided of how a UFO was tracked on multiple radars: "At one point during the tracking, when the UFO was in the Dutton area, radar showed the object suddenly ascending vertically from 14,750 feet to 44,400 feet at 850 knots or approximately 1,000 miles per hour and then stopping suddenly. This maneuver startled military officials and law officers."

From this book, it is clear that local law offices were putting in a tremendous amount of hours trying to solve the mystery. The authors note that either the federal government was not investigating, or it was not sharing its information with local officers.
