    Paul Camelio and Christopher Shores in their account "Armee de l'Air: A Pictorial History of the French Air Force 1937-1945" offer a strong overview of the French Air Force during the Second World War. The piece begins with an introduction that touches on paint schemes and force structure, before moving on to a chapter on the prewar period where the French were caught between a disastrous restructuring of the aero industry on one hand and a rapidly rearming Luftwaffe on the other. The book goes on to discuss the "Phony War" period that lasted between the invasions of Poland and Norway/Denmark, before launching into the disastrous Battle of France where the French air force was thrown into an unequal battle against the better equipped and organized Luftwaffe. It then goes on to discuss Vichy operations such as those that took place in North Africa following the French surrender, and moves on with sections discussing French operations with the Allied air forces until the end of the war. It concludes with several detailed orders of battle, and tables showing the top-scoring French fighter units of the war. As an added plus the book is loaded throughout with photographs and several pages of color plates. The only weakness is that it lacks any detailed dissection of the French Air Force's failure in the Battle of France - but as a general overview this book offers an unmatched view of the Armee de l'Air in World War II.

    The unpublished photos alone make the book worth buying. The very accurate color profiles are a beautiful add on. If you want one book on the French Air Force in WWII then this is the book.
