Wonderful documentary on Buddy Holly
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2024I enjoyed this DVD very much! There are precious few film clips of Buddy Holly so I appreciate the ones included here. The interviews with Buddy's family members and friends are pretty good but I'm not sure how often I'll sit and watch them again. I wish the music clips could be separated out as bonus features so they can be enjoyed more readily.
I love the moments here where people such as Sonny Curtis and Buddy's brothers sing and strum acoustic guitars and, where once there was silence, suddenly there's this lovely music. Along those lines: I originally bought this DVD because I wanted the clip of Paul McCartney singing a lovely solo version of "Words of Love." Would that Paul recorded many more such unplugged songs! As the producer of this video, McCartney made sure this documentary represented the "real" life of Buddy Holly and his astonishingly beautiful musical legacy.
I'm happy to put this DVD on my Buddy Holly shelf.

I Love A Good Backstory
Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2010Thanks, and kudos to Sir Paul McCartney. Nice job! This is a great DVD if you really appreciate Buddy Holly's contribution to rock music, and thanks to Sir Paul for his caring and respect for this music over the many years. I was pleased to hear the recollections of all the former Crickets and Holly partners, as well as to see his family members, the session piano playing of Vi Petty, and the best of the live performances by Buddy and the Crickets. The only thing I thought was missing, was that there was no mention of the 3 backup vocal groups that Petty utilized on Buddy's most exciting hit recordings. These recordings were truly made more exciting both by his guitar licks, the presence of The Picks, The Roses, and the Tolletts singing backups on the originals. This was in contrast to the lack of the backup "doo-wahs" in the live performances. I don't want to say my age (:o)), but I was 13 years old when "That'll Be The Day" and "Maybe Baby" hit me in the face for the first time, and I was hooked on Buddy & The Crickets for life. I've watched the DVD three times, now, and get emotional, at some point, every time. If you love Buddy Holly and the Crickets, you gotta own this DVD!

Thanks Buddy
Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2010Although I didn't find the movie "The Buddy Holly Story" too insulting (I never knew the bloke), I can understand why those who did in fact have some connection with him, want to put the record straight.
"The Real Buddy Holly Story" is a pretty standard music documentary, which I must confess I will always be a sucker for. Although I found it didn't bring to life anything overly insightful, it contains some great interviews with many music icons, particularly a couple with "Keef" Richards of the Stones. It is always great to see his clouded intellect in full flight, during his hazy heights of the seventies. However, the interviews I found the most personal and interesting, were those of his two brothers. What wonderful Texan country folk they are, and their memories of their great brother are indeed grounded and humane.
For any Buddy Holly fan, the brief live vintage footage alone, makes this worthwhile watching, not to mention the live playing of Jerry Allison. What an underated drummer and so crucial to the sound of The Crickets.
Anybody who has an interest on Buddy's impact or his music, will be more than happy with what this documentary has to offer.

THE REAL Buddy Holly Story
Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2002Excellent documentary from Paul McCartney setting the record straight on the true Holly legend and legacy with pertinent interviews from the people who knew him first and best, his brothers Larry and Travis Holley (yes..that is the correct spelling of the family name!), original Crickets Jerry ("J.I.") Allison and Joe ("Joe B.") Mauldin, plus current Cricket member Sonny Curtis (writer of "Rock Around With Ollie Vee, "I Fought The Law", and later on The Mary Tyler Moore theme song "Love Is All Around"). Probably the best video archival record of Buddy Holly out there and more than worth the price for any "true" Buddy afficianado. If all you have ever seen or heard about Buddy Holly comes from the movie, what I euphemistically call "The Gary Busey Story", and please see my review of the VHS version of that one, do yourself a huge favor and get yourself a copy of this documentary before you "Rave On" to the rest of us about the wonderfulness of the movie and Gary Busey's performance of a film that, by the producer's own admission, was never designed to be a factual account of Buddy Holly's life anyway. Jerry Allison himself said it should be called "The Buddy Hollywood Story". I heartily concur! McCartney, who owns the rights to Holly's music, does him the true justice that the movie sadly denied him. As Sonny Curtis so eloquently stated in his song "The Real Buddy Holly Story", written by him shortly after the movie came out, "The levy isn't dry, and the music didn't die, 'cause Buddy Holly lives every time we play rock and roll."
Amen Sonny!

A Must-have for Holly-philes old and young! Aug 2, 2002
Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2002I'm grateful to Paul McCartney for making this video for 2 reasons. First, with all due respect to Gary Busey who is a great actor in his own right, that movie wasn't Buddy. It's impossible to play a Legend who was and still is larger than life. Second, The Real Buddy Holly Story explains in part why he was as great as he was - he had the perfect setting for his genius to flourish, with a down-to-earth, supportive and loving family & good childhood friends of long duration who shared his interests & worked with him without (it seems) harboring any rivalry or animosity over his growing fame. He seems to have had an innate belief in his own ability to be a great musician, and the dogged determination to let nothing deter him. Most of all, this video helped me to appreciate the simple, basic honesty of Buddy Holly's music and the circumstances under which it was produced. It has a timeless quality that is a far cry from what passes for R&R nowadays! I was 16 years old when The Music came to a crashing halt in a frozen Iowa cornfield. Now, 43 years later, I will watch this movie over and over, each time finding something in it I hadn't noticed before.

Alexianna5 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseAn Intimate Look At The Life Of Man Behind The Name
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 14, 2014This is a beautifully made film about Buddy Holly. Paul McCartney interviews people who actually knew Buddy and worked with him in his lifetime. They all tell a story and by the end it leaves you with an impression of what the man must have been like. If anything it leaves you with a deeper sense of how tragic his untimely death really was. We lost a great man the day Buddy Holly died. If you have an interest in him and if you have or haven't seen the other more fictional Buddy Holly story film (I haven't) I truly recommend this.
