Into Broadway's creative vacuum of revivals, movie adaptations, and Hollywood star vehicles comes Rent, the story of squatters, junkies, performance artists, struggling musicians, drag queens, aspiring filmmakers, and HIV-positives (and you thought Miss Saigon's helicopter landing was cool). Undoubtedly among the defining pop cultural events of 1996, Rent has already won four Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. More importantly, it threatens to bring substance back to the Great White Way. Transposing Puccini's 100-year-old opera La Bohème into modern day Bohemia (19th-century Paris's Left Bank becomes late-20th-century New York's East Village where the scourge of tuberculosis becomes the plague of AIDS) Rent celebrates life among the young, sick, and unconventional. While Broadway shows are hardly the place for authentic portrayals of the latest marginalized hipsters, composer Jonathan Larson (who died at age 36, days before his musical opened) managed to sculpt vivid characters and scenes that bring Avenue A as close as it will ever come to 42nd Street. And by telling a socially relevant story of living without the guarantee of a future (renting, that is), Larson does his own little bit to define an X'ed generation. At worst, Rent is the Hair of the '90s. For the majority of us who won't be seeing Rent anytime soon, the Original Cast Recording is more than just an after-show souvenir. Well-packaged with a complete libretto, the two-CD set is a worthwhile album separate of live performance. Full of songs that are funny and catchy, inspiring and touching, smart and hip and not overly sentimental, Rent mixes show tune pop with elements of rock, R&B, dance, gospel, and tango to make one of the best albums of the year--certainly the best rock opera in decades.

    Rent launched the careers of Daphne Rubin Vega, Anthony Rapp, Taye Diggs, and (perhaps most popularly) Jesse L. Martin, of Law & Order fame. Sure he's a tough cop, but when you hear him sing "I'll Cover You" you realize exactly why it is that so many actors and actresses say their first love is the theater. Martin is so much more than some cog in Dick Wolf's Law and Order machine. He has a voice that can bowl you over.

    The movie didn't bowl audiences over. (We won't blame that on the replacement of Vega with Rosario Dawson *cough* Idiots! *cough*) Seasons of Love, and Stevie Wonder, how can you go wrong there?

    Especially when one takes the time to read the story of Jonathan Larson, as told by brilliant writer David Lipsky. "525,600 minutes--how do you measure a year in the life?" Larson was a man so in love with his craft that he basically worked himself to death in order to leave the world this beautiful, amazing legacy of song, of love, of heart. It is a MUST-HAVE CD!

    RENT is a tour de force of emotions, relationships, convictions, promises and lies. The music is beautifully melodic in some areas and grooving funk in others. It's rock 'n' roll and it's classic musical style. It follows the ageless tradition of musicals that have preceeded and it has started something wonderful for musicals of the future to draw from for years to come.
    The roles are deep and complex but they're just about as everyday as you can get. They're a bunch of friends, enemies and lovers in NYC trying to live their dreams, but trying to do it in the purest way possible. Mark's performance is the pivotal one, narrating and tying the individual stories together, and Roger's is the most painful. Tom is sensibility and Angel is reason. Every facet of human nature and human emotion is present in this recording and this whole show. It is a marvel of modern theatre and the music is brilliant. The words are all like poems, beautiful epic poems. They'll make you cry and they'll make you think and they'll most of all make you ponder life. No day but today!!!

Yes it can be a little dated with references to AZT and the like, and AIDS no longer is an automatic death sentence, but feel free to insert your struggle of choice instead; I don't think the author would mind. Ordinary people face life and death struggles every day and the lucky ones have someone to lean on for support. A lot of people don't. RENT speaks to both groups and everyone else in between. Live your life with joy and be grateful for what you have. We are all here for only a short time so you might as well make a big noise right? To me, RENT celebrates that attitude. Recommended? Of course!

    For the most part, an excellent recording of (what can be) a very powerful show. Some of the voices here (for example, Mimi's and Roger's) are a bit too grating to listen to for long periods of time. That's okay though, because Rent is really meant to be seen and heard, not just heard. To actually watch Roger's and Mimi's performances instead of just listening is fantastic, because the rawness of their voices adds to their desperate situation. Much of this music is dialogue - hence the term "rock opera" - and really needs to be listened to in context. There are a few notable and famous exceptions - Seasons of Love being the most notable - that can really be listened to without context, but the rest of the show really needs to be seen and heard. Perhaps much of the soundtrack isn't very easy to listen to, but Rent is a show that needs to be seen. Perhaps try the Filmed on Broadway version for the full experience! But do yourself a favor and do not see the overbearing movie version.

Martin as Tom Collins, Wilson Jermaine Heredia as Angel Dumott Schunard, Fredi Walker as Joanne Jefferson, Idinal Menzel as Maureen Johnson. The music and cast is absolutely spectacular and in my own opinion is one of the best broadway musicals ever. Some of my favourite songs include "Light My Candle", "I'll Cover You", "Will I?" "La Vie Boheme A & B", "Seasons of Love", "The Tango Maureen", "Without You", "Take Me Or Leave Me", and "Finale B". The message through the lyrics are amazing, this soundtrack is sure to exceed your expectations!
