great information
Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2020Format: PaperbackThis is a very respectful and intelligent set of answers for many of the questions atheist's/agnostics receive regularly from people who believe in various forms of religion. I'm looking forward to reading some of this author's other books.

This book was fantastic, it was short and succinct
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2017Format: PaperbackThis book was fantastic, it was short and succinct. It takes some of his most commonly asked questions and gives his honest answers. David is very good about responding respectfully and without hate or disrespect towards the religious.
The only con I really had with it was the print quality, the cover and and pages were not super high quality but I can understand that as a smaller non-profit like the Atheist Republic they probably need to keep cost down. I would totally be willing to pay a little more for a higher quality or hard cover version in the future.

Useful and fair
Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2019Format: KindleMcAfee succinctly and fair-mindedly lays out the case for his secularism and mild anti-theism. He does continue the somewhat problematic assertion that seems to limit religion to a) theistic belief based systems and then b) tautological to just believe in unsupported beliefs, but this is common to everyone writing about religion who is not an anthropologist and thus pointing out the problems with the entire category historically. His worldview laid out clearly, briefly, fairly, and with a board-minded approach. It can be repetitive given the nature of the questions and often I wish he had developed brief answers into chapters where he may have avoided some of the other problems I mention below.
Beyond repetition, this is not a perfect book, here and there McAfee makes a few minor assertions where he seems to make a few stronger claims that conflate statistics and causes than can that seems problematic for someone who is touting a scientific worldview. For example, pointing out that fairly secular Japan has lower depression rates than West and pointing a correlation to secularism without noting that Japan has a very, very high suicide rate and it is not clear that question is understood in the same way in Japan or that recent studies in 2015 to 2017 (which he doesn't cite specifically when he says "You can see love on brain scans" but I found trying to confirm his point) shows the effects of hormones linked to "romantic love" but says there is still a lot more study that needs to be done to disaggregate exactly what is happening.
Yet, McAfee is not as strident or bombastic as many who would agree with him, he is consistent in his approach, and where he makes what I see as over-claims (although, if any, few outright errors), these are kind of technical points which are of importance but do not invalidate his other major points. Suggested for those new to debates around secularity.

a rational outlook
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2016Format: PaperbackI enjoyed the book.
I like David's easy to read and easy to understand style.
The book, to me, is more than just atheist answers. It's really skeptics answers to many questions, most of which center on religion. It promotes a rational, logical, fact-based, secular, humanist way of looking at both the world and religion.
This is the second book of David's that I've bought for myself.
Whether an atheist, someone with doubts, or a believer who wants to see how non-bellievers think, I would recommend the read.
Oh, and David is non-confrontational throughout. He may sometimes be humorous, which may be off-putting to some, but he never seems condescending.

Excellence compilation of ideas and responses.
Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2020Format: PaperbackThis book not only helped me understand the arguments that religious people use but also their mindset when they talk about their religion. This is very helpful indeed. I consider myself a person that has David’s idea of what a society could accomplish if we leave archaic thinking behind. Upon seeing the comments from a few people I realized that this goal is more complicated than I thought since a majority of their thinking lies with not questioning things and if they don’t question things out of fear of god they will not be able to evolve their thinking. I support his work and all he is trying to do because that is how we as a species will progress. On another note I could also see that there are a few people that are starting to open their eyes to the ridiculous notion of a ‘all loving’ creator and knowing that David is helping awaken these people makes me content. Thank you my good sir for your work, it has reached Puerto Rico as well.

Worth the time, money, and effort to read it.
Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2017Format: KindleIt's a good book. An honest and thoughtful approach to questions that Christians, new Atheists, and those sitting on the fence might ask. The only people who won't like this book are those who don't want to ask questions (or ask questions that they don't want answered).
His writing style is casual and easy to read-- but not dumbed down for the "layperson".

A Fair and Decent Book for the Subject
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2017Format: KindleA fair book. Although some readers may disagree, the author is calm, considerate, and decent. In the strict sense, he fully acknowledges that he is an atheist in the sense that he does not have any active beliefs in any god or gods. Nevertheless, unlike some atheist writers, he is not at all hostile and does not try to stomp out religion from the public sphere. He is willing to allow religious beliefs at the same time that he does not agree with them and seeks to persuade believers otherwise based on what he considers evidence and reason. Among books that I have read by atheist writers, this is one of the best and fairest. Recommended.

HONEST review from an ACTUAL person who READ the book.
Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2016Format: KindleIf you need rational responses to creationists and religious zealots this is the book you should use. Well thought out responses to such idiotic questions such as "Don't you want to go to heaven?" or "How can there be no god if my prayers get answered?" and my favorite "How can you be a good person if you don't believe in an invisible sky daddy who tells you how to think/act/be." (I'm paraphrasing that one).
I own all of David's books and feel that those people who have an IQ under 80, are a trump supporter, or tend towards theism, they will NOT understand the subject matter and should just go get a coloring book or something.
5 stars from me. And if you notice, I'm not a troll.. I actually have an honest-to-goodness account here and HAVE purchased this book.. as well as dozens of others.. so I DO know how to actually read...

Reviewed in Canada on November 29, 2022Format: PaperbackThis was a short, easy read about atheism. I was surprised to see the range of questions the author has been asked regarding his non-belief. Reading through this book may give people more confidence about revealing they too are atheists.
