About the author
Follow authors to get new release updates, plus improved recommendations. What if a life of lucky breaks isn’t luck at all—but the result of showing up, taking risks, and staying curious?
Tom Huening has lived many lives: Catholic schoolboy turned teenage troublemaker, Navy pilot turned Vietnam skeptic, TWA pilot turned entrepreneur, politician turned spiritual seeker. Through it all, he kept asking one question: How do I live a life that matters?
From Cold War cockpits to California politics, from Catholic confession to rational spirituality, Huening charts a course through the defining experiences of the American twentieth century—always propelled forward by curiosity, gratitude, and a healthy dose of luck.
Tom's latest book (May 2nd release) is Got Lucky, Patriotic Catholic Confronts Country and Church.
Inside you’ll find:
• A Navy pilot’s firsthand account of Vietnam-era service and the moral reckoning that followed
• An honest, irreverent examination of faith, Catholicism, and building a personal spiritual life on your own terms
• Stories of risk, reinvention, and resilience across careers, continents, and decades
Got Lucky is a candid and humorous memoir for readers who have wrestled with faith, questioned authority, and wondered whether the path they’re on is truly their own. More than a story of one man’s extraordinary ordinary life, it is proof that luck favors those willing to keep asking what comes next.
Tom's career includes carrier-qualified Navy jet fighter pilot, commercial airline pilot, lawyer, CPA, elected county supervisor, and controller. His recent book, Thomas Jefferson's Bible, Freedom of Religion in America, updates the founding president's cut and paste Bible version and renews the founding father's call for religious freedom and separation of church and state.
Huening once hosted Spiritual Choices, a local TV program interviewing local and national spiritual leaders with disparate points of view and in August 2024 released Spiritual Choices, Putting the HERE in Hereafter (2nd edition). Tom earlier wrote about a renegade priest in The Quintessential Good Samaritan, The Authorized Biography of John Joseph Kelly, Champion of Social Justice, released by Post Hill Press in 2022.

Valuable insights into the brilliant mind of Thomas Jefferson
Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2024Format: PaperbackTom Huening’s newest book opened my eyes to another aspect of Jefferson’s genius: his capacity to capture what he felt were the truly important aspects of Jesus’s messages. Huening’s crisp writing in the first three parts of the book set the stage with an overview of the Bible’s evolution, outline of Jefferson’s life, and description of how Jefferson created his version of the Bible. These parts read like a great adventure story that engaged me on every page. Huening’s Part 4 offers comments on sections of Jefferson’s Bible which expanded my awareness of the context behind the Bible’s parts that Jefferson felt were important. Part 5's overview of responses to Jefferson’s work reveal how difficult it is for some to even consider alternate perspectives about their belief systems. Huening’s Part 6 conclusion clarifies Jefferson’s conviction that religion and politics need to remain separate and his view about the value in a diversity of beliefs that should be openly appreciated and discussed.
I strongly recommend this book.
Buy it, read it, and purchase copies for others so you can discuss it with them.

“…the negative results of church/state alliances: that is, the theocratic becomes autocratic
Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2024Format: PaperbackThomas Huening’s insightful analysis and powerfully articulate, eloquent writing demonstrate a deep understanding of Thomas Jefferson’s crucial historical significance.
I especially appreciate how Huening highlighted Jefferson’s reverence for religious freedom while emphasizing the importance of keeping religion and government separate.
This is an outstanding work, a real page-turner that holds your interest. It’s also a timely and enlightening reminder for these challenging times of increasing theocratic and dogmatic rhetoric in politics.
👍🏼👍🏼 Highly recommend! and personally purchasing several more copies to share with colleagues, friends and family.

Freedom in America and the Bible
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2024Format: PaperbackWhen our forefathers declared independence from England the ideal was freedom of conscience and religion, and our right to pursue our own happiness. This book does a masterful job of describing the intersection of the Christian Bible and Religion with a free, democratic government as envisioned by Thomas Jefferson. The book's story of the history and development of the Bible was a revelation to me, and Jefferson's thoughts about Jesus are illustrated by the passages he chose to include in "The Jefferson Bible". A good and thought provoking read.

Thomas Jefferson cements separation of church and state
Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2024Format: Paperback23 years ago a friend of mine and I started a Bible study. We met when we could and worked our way through the Old and New Testaments and then back again. Neither of us are Bible Scholars and that showed when it turned out we had never heard of the Jefferson Bible.
Jefferson Democracy was a favorite of mine in high school. Our 13 colonies were founded on the separation of church and state. Jefferson did well with the cementing that separation in the Constitution, but his philosophy on government intervention not so well. All these issues and more came rushing back to me when I read Tom Huening's, Thomas Jefferson's Bible.
Tom's book starts with a tub nail sketch on Jefferson's life. It is good review which I needed. Next Tom focuses on the Jefferson Bible. This Bible, I had read in tandem with Tom's work and is fascinating basically deleting all the miracles and placing Jesus' life in chronological order. The combination of the Jefferson Bible and Tom's work tries to change our view of the life of Jesus and for me this paradigm is pretty stiff in my memory. My belief systems were formed early in life, reinforced often and difficult to address. So, Thomas Jefferson's Bible made me think. It dredged up memories of lazies faire economics and high school history. I thank Tom Huening for his work and making me think.
