Description
In the tradition of its other fine historical dramatic series, like Robin Hood, William Tell and Sir Lancelot, TMG proudly brings you The Buccaneers, based on the true story of England's attempt to destroy the Caribbean pirate's stranglehold on shipping routes in the New World. Produced in England at the famed Nettlefold Studio sound stages in Walton-on-Thames, The Buccaneers features the noted British actor Robert Shaw (Jaws, A Man For All Seasons) as Captain Dan Tempest, a pardoned ex-pirate, and Peter Hammond (The Avengers) as Lt. Beamish, the Crown-appointed deputy governor of the pirate-infested island of New Providence, in the Bahamas. In true swashbuckling tradition, Tempest and his former pirate crew of his swift corsair, The Sultana, take on the Spanish privateers ravaging the Caribbean. Receiving a pardon from the King in return for giving up a life of piracy, Tempest and his stalwarts confront the privateers on the high seas of the Spanish Main. Swordplay abounds, as the forces of the Crown struggle to rid the New World of pirates, the likes of Blackbeard, a constant irritant to Captain Tempest and a recurring villain in the series. Many of Britain's finest actors of the time took part in the series, including Paul Hansard, Edwin Richfield, Alec Clunes, Neil Hallett and Brian Rawlinson. The 30 episodes in this 3 DVD set are among the best of The Buccaneers, featuring the daring adventure and exciting exploits of Captain Tempest and his not-always-so-merry crew!

I loved this series when I was 10. Allowing for the technology of the time, it's still a fun show, with good dialogue and good acting. Camera work is generally tight and the sets don't shake.
I am still in love with Lt. Beamish, and the wary relationship he and Tempest develop. But after watching and rewatching 50 years later, I find Hammond's Beamish is the best character in the show. Certainly the most developed one. (And this close to drop-dead gorgeous). Shaw was pretty much playing himself. But Hammond fleshed out what was essentially a comedy relief role of a naive bumbler with authority figure issues into someone with real grit underneath, added the touchstone orf "King and Country", honor and friendship, and went toe to toe with Shaw's ego and came out dead even or sometimes ahead.
The ad-libs and one-upmanship in this old series are just a tickle. I have no idea of what the professional relationship between Shaw and Hammond was, but the two characters really click.
Pity that Beamish disappears after episode 26. The show loses some spark as Tempest has no one to really bounce off of. Beamish was the only one who butted heads with him.
This is a Broadway musical waiting to happen. Someone please show this to Mel Brooks!
A terrific Yo Ho.
And thigh-high leather boots. . . .
One year later:
not only has it held up well and Beamish is as endearing as I remember, I actually managed to locate and contact the actor - Peter Hammond - who portrayed this delightful character.
After several phone conversations, he's 85 and delightful and charming, he barks and bites, he's coy and bright and a veteran curmudgeon all in a neat grandfatherly package.
memories don't come better than this. If I had met him when I was 10 I would have been struck dumb and brain-dead.
It's astounding to me the number of "official" media reviews of this old show I read that dismiss the Beamish character as a nearly total git when I am seeing the character evolve and mature. And I think that had to be Hammond's doing.

We still get the intelligence and ironic humor, but here he's not only dashing but attractively protective of his little crew, the town, and anyone else he's called on to save... quite the reformed pirate! Of course it's aimed at children, but the scripts are quite decent - I'm sure similar to the Richard Greene "Robin Hood" series I enjoyed so much as a child - and there's a purity to the whole thing, a return to a time of innocence when three men could take a ship with one pistol and a belaying pin (as happens in almost every episode), more people were hit on the head than skewered (and never suffered concussions), the tavern is a jolly place with much good singing, and while portrayals of women are hardly progressive, the women do show some initiative and don't just wait to be rescued. I am especially fond of Armando's wife. I'm sorry Shaw was unavailable for the first two episodes, though the governor was quite the stalwart English type. Acting Governor Beamish makes a good comic foil, sometimes foolish, sometimes a decent enough chap. I like the fact that everyone makes mistakes and must get out of them, Dan included, but there is such an underlying good heart and sense of decency that it makes a wonderful escape from current events and our vastly more cynical entertainment. I only wish there were more episodes!

On this release are all 39 episodes of the series run in glorious black & white. The set is in a good quality 3 DVD plastic jewel case.
Hey this is fine Sunday and rainy day matinee fare and well worth it. Considering the age pretty good reproduction - I have seen worse by Mill Creek Entertainment and so was pleasantly surprised & am prepared to check out their other releases.
There is lots of action in this very British series and some fine character actors and it reminds me each time I watch an episode to go back to watch those old swash-buckling pirate movies with Tyrone Power and Errol Flynn. This is all aimed at a younger audience and low on bloody & in-your-face violence compared to what we see these days. I believe suitable for all ages - young & old alike!
If you like classic TV and need to replace the current rubbish on TV screens for an hour or two, this is a fine chance to watch television of yesteryear!

The first two-thirds of these installments take place in and around New Providence in the Bahamas, with Captain Dan Tempest (Robert Shaw) leading a small band of fellow reformed pirates in support of the colonial administration, headed by acting governor Edward Beamish (Peter Hammond). Although the plots are usually based on a serious conflict or issue, there is a constant light touch about the stories, with the interplay between Tempest and Beamish generally at the forefront. Beamish's character evolves along the way, changing from an inept goat to an effective if still semi-comic fellow. The last third of the series changes venue, with Beamish and New Providence left behind as Tempest and his crew take to the Atlantic and find new adventures along the Carolina coast and beyond. In passing, I'll mention that the first two episodes feature Alec Clunes as the real-life governor Woodes Rogers, who sets up the system of pardons that bring Tempest and his pals back inside the law. The supporting cast is a colorful lot, and though we see the same ship posing as different vessels in the course of the series and many of the same stock shots over and over, this is a fun romp.

His character shows a little piracy, a little con man, and a little diplomat.
Although the sword fighting is very basic, the shows are interesting and in many ways historically accurate. One show has women looking for husbands, coming to New Providence. Blackbeard plays a major role as an adversary to Captain Tempest. It's a fun set and has 39 episodes. Well worth the price I paid for it through Amazon.

At least what I've seen of it so far, which does not include the first 13 episodes.
Two stars is for the fact that I couldn't read the first disk in any of my devices. Also the first disk is mislabeled, with the second half of the episodes not having the right names (on the label -- I can't verify if the disk is correct or not).

I didn' t want to disappoint a friend hoping to see this set so I reordered it. The issue was with disc 3 where it had major issues toward the end of episode 33, which is the first half of the disc, and it carried over to the second set of episodes on the disc.
The first thing I did with the new set was to view the third disc to make sure there were no issues with it. Then I exchanged it with the problem disc in the first set so I had at least the one playable set.
My next step will be to try and repair the disc that had problems. I have an old Memorex Optifix Pro that gives mixed results trying to repair DVDs. It is a discontinued system, so I don't feel confident the disc can be repaired.
I decided to reorder the dvd set before trying to repair the faulty disc because the set is not very expensive and I was concerned it might not be available later on since I have only found it available on Amazon. An Oldies website has some 4 episode sets but it was much cheaper to buy this complete set from Amazon.
As I have only checked out the one disc in the replacement set, I cannot verify it has no issues at this time.
One negative about both of the sets is the case they come in. It is a three disc case with a center tray for one disc, but they don't hold the discs very well. In fact, MillCreek puts a soft foam rubber square between the first disc and the center tray. That didn't do much good for disc three in back, which doesn't hold in very well either. I ended up padding the third disc with a foam disc from a blank dvd cakebox I had on hand.
My last step is to replace both cases to prevent potential damage to the discs. After going thru so much trouble getting a playable set I want to protect them as much as I can.
One additional comment on the set is that the last few episodes are really the best of the bunch. I guess it took the actors awhile to get things together. Had it gone another season it might have been a really good series.
My original one star review:
I was going to give this a 3 star rating until I tried watching the last 7 episodes on disc 3. Naturally, just when the action got going, the disc stopped...started...stopped...started...stopped...started...stopped...and stopped dead.
These are double layer discs I think and several years ago I tried burning my own DL discs a few times but gave up when they had issues too.
The first two discs of this set had no problems, except the audio wasn't great. The stories were rather boring and I wasn' t all that impressed with the characters since none of them, with the exception of the island's first governor and then the acting governor, had any semblance of a hero-type personality (including the so-called Capt. Tempest).
Then, along about the first episode of the third disc, the stories and characters got better and I was beginning to enjoy them...until episode 33 when the disc failed.
This series was supposedly produced for children's entertainment, but, with the exception of the swashbuckling swordplay, the kiddies likely were bored with most of it. That is probably why the series only ran for one season.
I would like to buy discs that contain the episodes from the damaged disc 3 in this set since I intended them for a library, but it may not be in production anywhere now. This set is not well packaged, nor we'll produced for that matter. It would have been better to use single layer discs and charged accordingly to get a better product.

It was in the days when kid's television was presented - I almost think it had to pass the adults' test before it was shown. The series are as I expected, inventive, fun - the baddies getting done it - but also episodes of understanding - for instance in consideration of episode the slaves in which Robert Shaw uses his wiles to obtain their release - an important point - many people today do not realise that much of the economy of the time was based on, for example, slaves working on the sugar plantations. Historically not as well researched as may be - but many of the characters, Vane as a pirate was a real person, for example, and New Providence was a colony on the very edge. So thumbs up for it and I hope many will take the stories as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote in his preface to the Lost World. This story is for the boy who is half a man - and the man who is half a boy. Excellent series and well worth the money. Ralph Smart, who was involved in this production later went on to produce the half hour series and hour long series of Danger Man which introduced Patrick McGoohan to a wider audience and is still considered one of the best secret agent series every made and still many years after completion still compares very favourably with much of the output of modern television.
