Shortlisted for International Affairs Book of the Year in the Paddy Power Political Book Awards 2014

Angela Merkel was already unique when she became German chancellor: the first female leader of Europe’s biggest economy, the first from former communist East Germany and the first born after World War II. Since 2010, the debt crisis that spread from Greece to the euro region and the world economy has propelled her to center-stage, making Merkel the dominant politician in the struggle to preserve Europe’s economic model and its single currency. Yet the Protestant pastor’s daughter is often viewed as enigmatic and hard-to-predict, a misreading that took hold as she resisted global pressure for grand gestures to counter the crisis. Having turned the fall of the Berlin Wall to her advantage, Merkel is trying to get history on her side again after reaching the fundamental decision to save the euro, the crowning achievement of post-war European unity. Merkel has brought Europe to a crossroads. Germany’s economic might gives her unprecedented power to set the direction for the European Union’s 500 million people. What’s at stake is whether she will persuade them to follow the German lead.

Angela Merkel: A Chancellorship Forged in Crisis is the definitive new biography of the world’s most powerful woman. Delving into Merkel’s past, the authors explain the motives behind her drive to remake Europe for the age of globalization, her economic role models and the experiences under communism that color her decisions. For the first time in English, Merkel is fully placed in her European context. Through exclusive interviews with leading policy makers and Merkel confidants, the book reveals the behind-the-scenes drama of the crisis that came to dominate her chancellorship, her prickly relationship with the U.S. and admiration for Eastern Europe. Written by two long-standing Merkel watchers, the book documents how her decisions and vision – both works in progress – are shaping a pivotal moment in European history.

Review

"Crawford and Czuczka's approach of understanding one of the most powerful women in the world through her actions and policies during the eurozone's debt crisis lends much credibility to their account." (Gulf Business, March 2014)

"This book is absolutely fascinating. If I had my way it would be on the curriculum in secondary schools and third level institutions all over Ireland." (Irish Independent, September 2013)

"For David Cameron, the significant political relationship in Europe is with Germany's chancellor, Angela Merkel. What makes her tick should be of crucial importance and an insight can be found in Alan Crawford and Tony Czuczka's Angela Merkel: A Chancellorship Forged in Crisis." (Total Politics, August 2013)

"Czuczka and Crawford raise some pointed, timely questions about her analysis and handling of the euro crisis that have shaped her chancellorship." (Irish Times, August 2013)

"The two authors tell the euro story well, but their most interesting material is about her past. Such details, which include her upbringing in communist East Germany, her position as a woman in a man's world and her background as a research chemist, help to define her domestic politics and her approach to the euro." (The Economist, July 2013)

"...an insightful political biography." (The Financialist, July 2013)

"...a crisp new account.... The Bloomberg correspondents' book is as much about the course of the eurozone crisis as it is about the German chancellor." (Financial Times, June 2013)

"In their book Bloomberg News journalists Alan Crawford and Tony Czuczka track Merkel's cautious course, often criticized as faltering and hesitant, through the uncharted waters of Europe's subprime, economic and sovereign debt crisis." (Bloomberg, June 2013)

“This is a most interesting read of how Angela Merkel has dealt with the Euro crisis, reflecting on her own unique upbringing and background, and how it may have influenced her decisions. An important read for anyone trying to understand the German leadership through the crisis.”

About the Author

Alan Crawford (Berlin, Germany) joined Bloomberg News as German government editor in January 2006, six weeks after Merkel was sworn in, and steered coverage of her first and second terms as her global importance grew. He lived in Warsaw and Prague after the fall of the Berlin Wall and has reported from across Europe, east and west. He previously worked on The Scotsman and the Sunday Herald in Glasgow and in Edinburgh, covering the Highlands, Scottish and U.K. politics.

Tony Czuczka (Berlin, Germany) is an American foreign correspondent who joined Bloomberg News in 2009 as the political writer covering Chancellor Merkel, her re-election and the eruption of the European debt crisis. For the past four years, he has had access granted to only a few foreign reporters, from invitation-only gatherings where Merkel displays rare flashes of humor to global conferences that expose the strains of leadership. He has also worked for The Associated Press in Germany, the Balkans, Eastern Europe, Switzerland and New York.

    The Financial Chancellor

Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2013
    Format: Kindle

This is an important book because biographies of Angela Merkel in English are rare. It is a thoughtful work focusing particularly on the global financial crisis and the euro crisis. It has some worthwhile material about Merkel's early life which provides context to her actions in recent years. The book is includes useful footnotes which give the text more authority. Interviews with central players add to this authority.

In sum, the book provides insight into key people and events during a very crucial time in the European project. It is also a pleasure to read.

Excellent Study on the Euro Crisis but the Inner "Mutti" Still Elusive

Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2013
    Format: Hardcover

While this book provides extraordinary insights into the behind the scene efforts to right the Euro crisis, the beloved "Mutti", whom history will remember as Angela the Great, remains elusive as a person, which is probably best, at least until Angela Merkel writes her own autobiography -- those who admire her like me hope "Mutti" will write in due course, because we can all learn tremendously from a young lady whose life mirrored the rise of Germany to an economic powerhouse comparable to that of the US in the European Union and Euro Zone, which Chancellor Angela Merkel helped fortify.

This well written book deserves a five star, had its central theme not been about the intensely private Angela Merkel. It's doubtful anyone other than Angela Merkel can write a book about herself and her extraordinary life's journey to become the 21st Century Catherine the Great -- thank goodness Mutti left no dead bodies in her shadow.

This book is a must read for those who bet against the viability of the Euro. The authors seem to have been flies on the walls during the history-changing high-level meetings that actually occurred! The book's central protagonist, Angela Merkel, kept me riveted to the book -- I hope there will be a sequel to this book. Excellent editing to condense enormous amounts of rich and dense information into a humanly relatable story, which is what every history book should emulate because history is about human events and actions. This book is a keeper for me for future reference, as it should be for students of history and business and political leaders -- we can learn tremendously from the successes and mistakes of Angela the Great!

Angela Merkel, A Woman of Principle!

Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2015
    Format: Kindle

This book increased my admiration for Angela Merkel. Her clear vision for the euro, Greece, Ireland, and others is strong because she is strong and knows how to stick to her wise principles. The book itself was a bit technical with lots of acronyms. Economists and political scientists will love it.

Angela Merkel: A Chancellorship in Crisis

Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2014
    Format: Kindle

I enjoyed reading this book on MS Merkel. My high opinion of MS Merkel was confirmed. Since the US is in similar circumstances as Germany was when MS Merkel took power, I had hoped fro a more in depth discussion of what she accomplished in Germany and was disappointed. Though I am aware that the basis of German thought is quite different from the consumer economy of the United States, there are some basic principles that could have been addressed and were not. My problem with this book, though interesting, were that the book was too cursory on subjects that needed more in depth discussion. I still recommend this book on one of the most formidable leaders in the western world.

    Repetitively technical

Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2014
    Format: Kindle

Not what I was looking for. Disjointed chapters flung together where the concern was more with academic referencing than edited, chronological, interpreted, connected material about Angela Merkel. I got the sense that there was a rush go bring this market. Disappointed and relieved that I got over wanting to read it. Skip and skim is the only way to survive it. Disappointing

Solid account of Angela Merkel's chancellorship for an international audience

Reviewed in Germany on July 29, 2013
    Format: Kindle

Solid account of Angela Merkel's chancellorship for an international audience. The focus lies on the retelling of her role during the financial and the EURO crises. The book is strong on Merkel's European and foreign policy. Still, it is somewhat marred by its lack of focus on Merkel's rise to power, her role as party leader and Germany's domestic politics.

    Destiny's Leader

Angela Merkel has had the job of holding Europe together ever since she was elected. Read this book if you are curious about how a little girl from East Germany became the most powerful people in the world and the most influential in all of Europe. A physicist by training, Merkel has dealt with saving the euro, saving other Euro nations from debt default, external political crises, globalization and now the crisis in the Ukraine. This book tells the story of how her leadership was forged in the face of such challenges and how her decisions have stabilized the political and economic worlds.

Big help to get where Merkel comes from on Eurozone issues

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2013
    Format: Hardcover

Totally fulfilled what I was looking for. This is not a biography of her life but one about Merkel in Eurozone crisis fighting times. If its a story of her life you want then dont get it. The book is nearly essentially focused on the Eurozone crisis time in her chancelorship which allows a thorough analysis. What little of her younger life is mentioned is there to explain her attitude to the Eurozone troubles and therefore is more than necessary. At times, but only rarely, the book does tend to go into some details which are not strictly necessary to understanding why Merkel works the way she works to deal with the Eurozone problems.

Although I've been following this area for a while I think the style of the book is on the whole suitable to a general audience. Of course it helps to have heard of some of the milestones mentioned, but the authors do a good job of not taking much for granted, included the technical knowledge of the reader.

I think it also helps that the authors are themselves not German. This prevents a focus on things which may be of exclusive German interest.

A great book to understand, and yet not necessarily agree with, a central figure of today's Eurozone.
