Classic Who from the 80s!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2023After some slightly disappointing Collection releases (i.e. Seasons 2 and 9 because they lacked new to blu ray enhanced special effects) comes this splendid 20th anniversary release with thankfully some brand new special effects for some stories including the "Five Doctors" anniversary special. Here we get plenty of Doctors - Messrs Troughton, Pertwee and, via "Shada" clips, (T) Baker are true legends plus there's Richard Hurndall standing in very well for the great William Hartnell. Peter Davison is present and correct throughout as the incumbent of course in this highly nostalgic season featuring lots of links to the past. The Brigadier, Master and Black Guardian all return as well plus we even get a glimpse of a certain future Doctor by way of Colin Baker appearing in "Arc of Infinity". This is all good stuff and I really love the welcome new enhanced special effects offering something new, particularly for those who've already seen previously released dvd versions of these stories. Looks great on blu ray so this is recommended!

The 20th Anniversary of Classic Doctor Who Celebrates in Style
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2023This is the season that we have been waiting for and boy it does not disappoint, I know I am a little bias when it comes to the 5th Doctor as he is my favourite but for any fan of Doctor Who this is an important milestone in the shows history as it reached 20 years.
All stories from season 20 have been beautifully restored and loaded with special features that are new and carried over from the previous releases on dvd.
The story that gets the best special treatment is of course The Five Doctors which upon having watched with the brand new special effects does not seem out of place and looks fantastic and it's only fitting that we now have this 40th Anniversary edition in the 60th Anniversary of the shows history.
I have yet to to watch the Special Edition of the Five Doctors that has the road trip but from what I have seen I am mightily impressed with how much has been lovingly put on each disc to satisfy the hardcore fan.
The Behind the sofa segments are great and with this one including two other doctors Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy with Sophie Aldred sat with Katy Manning who is loving watching these along with Peter Davison, Sarah Sutton and Janet Fielding are joined by Mark Strickson you are in for a treat.
There is nothing like Classic Doctor Who when you are feeling a bit down and this season will make you feel better so for a 5th Doctor fan or you love Doctor Who then this collection is for you.
There is a lovely chat between Janet Fielding and Martin Clunes as he looks back on his very first TV role and it does not feel like your regular interview but two people having casual chat with cameras that happen to be there, and it's a great insight into how he felt about appearing in Snakedance.
Also on the 40th Anniversary edition of the Five Doctors the audio commentary not only features Peter Davison, Janet Fielding and Mark Strickson but Matthew Sweet as well and is fun to listen to.
If you missed out on the Limited edition set than I would recommend the Standard edition when it is released if you just want the 5th Doctors era on Blu Ray.

Doctor who season 20
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 February 2025Season 20 features Peter Davison as Dr WHO along with many of the past faces of the Doctors. The boxset also has a lot of special features from the making of Dr WHO to archive treats. The boxset is a very competitive price and you get a lot for your money. It is a must for all ages and is truly worthy of watching.

Big set for a not-quite-so-big season
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 September 2023You already know if you're going to buy this set, a review on Amazon probably won't change your mind but, just in case you're wondering about it, let's take a look...
First things first, this is a big set -- there are nine discs and a thicker than usual booklet. The disc "block' was too heavy for the glue in mine so the disc trays are now free-floating but no serious harm is done. Of course three of those nine discs are different versions of The Five Doctors -- original broadcast, 40th Anniversary (of the story, not of Doctor Who) version and the 25th Anniversary edition, each with their own disc and separate sets of extras.
Do you *need* three versions? Not really, but there would certainly have been complaints if one previous version had been excluded so we Who fans have only ourselves to blame for that. As to the newest, relatively final, version, it's a nice attempt to make a defintive version with less of the adding and changong order of the 25th Anniversary version but I'm really not sure we needed it at all.
That leaves six frankly middling stories and their extras. No story in this season is really bad but none rise above the middling, except possibly Snakedance and Terminus. Most are fairly good *stories* let down by their presentation -- Terminus being the most obvious example in this set. All look as good as they're ever going to and have commentaries, audio extras, production subtitles and so on. Overall a three-to-four star season.
Onto the extras. We're spoilt for choice here, the newest Five Doctors disc featuring over 200 minutes of studio rushes amongst other things and two road-trip featurettes runnning over an hour each on one of the other Five Doctors discs. There are plenty of good new featurettes as well, a surprisingly excellent interview/reminisce with Martin Clunes and Matthew Sweet doing another couple of excellent companion interviews being highlights but things like new effects, making-ofs and so on are all pretty good too. The usual repack of the previous DVD features round out the set. There are about 9000 pages of scripts and paperwork on the discs too but I don't have access to those at the moment.
Overall this is a fine set with plenty to admire and no really duff stories. So why only 4 stars?
Three things:
- Cost (this set is 10% more expensive that the previous high price point for the Season 2 9-disc set)
- Those three versions of the Five Doctors feel excessive, like they're adding bulk and price rather than value
- Frankly the stories are only so-so and aren't worth five stars.
Now when we get season 13, that'll be worth five stars...

Doctor Who at it's best.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 November 2023Forget the new series....stick with the classics. This is British Dr Who at it's best. Heaven knows what Disney will do to Dr Who's future. Thank Goodness we can still watch these episodes to remind us of how good it really was when it didn't have loads of money spent on it. The Season 20 box set is great value for money. Cracking stories and the Five Doctors !!!

Reviewed in Australia on 14 August 2025Fantastic box set crammed with features about the Peter Davison era. The episodes are classic Who and there are so many interviews and behind the scenes documentaries that it would take weeks to plow through them. A wonderful tribute to the Davison era.

Reviewed in Australia on 18 December 2023Another great overall release by the BBC.
None of these stories would make anyone's top 30 from classic who, but they are all very enjoyable none the less.
The real genius about this set, as with the 13 previous releases, is ofcourse the supplemental features. Not only do you get the original dvd release features, you get so much more in these releases that it is a joy to watch.
