About the Author

●Jez Humble:2004年以来、ジェズはThoughtWorksと、北京、バンガロール、ロンドン、サンフランシスコのThoughtWorks Studioで働いている。オクスフォード大学の物理学および哲学の学士と、ロンドン大学東洋アフリカ学部民族音楽学の修士を有している。現在は、サンフランシスコに妻と娘と住んでいる。

    500ページ超の大作。読むのに3週間かかりました。

    最初から作るべきものがはっきり見えていない場合、もしくはfacebookやこのamazonのようにどんどん機能を追加していくような開発を行なう場合、どのようにして品質を保って、高速に開発を行なうかを動機から方法論を筆者の経験を混じえて、非常に実践的に説明しています。

    ソフトウェア開発を行なっていて鬱憤がいろいろ溜っている人にお勧めです。読むのを躊躇している人は、最初に15.5 デリバリーによくある問題 -- その症状と原因を読んでピンとくるようであれば買ったほうがいいです。

    これを実際に実現する仕組みを作るのは相当大変です。ソフトウェア、環境、意志、経営、すべてからんでいます・・・ということを考えながら読んでいくととても時間がかかりました。「アジャイル = 泥縄」というパターンにならないために、こういう仕組みを考え、実装していく必要があるんだと強く感じました。

    いつまで手動でデプロイするんだろう、本当に。本書を手に取った時、そんなことを自問してしまいました。

    ジョルトアワードに選ばれた本だけのことはあり、内容は濃く、日本の地方エンジニアからしてみれば雲上人の啓示のようなことが順を追って丁寧に述べられています。

    訳者も後書きで述べられている通り、とにかく分厚い。

    まずは目次と第１部を流し読みし、気になったところにポストイットなどの付箋を張り付けて置いて後から精読することをおすすめします。

    第２部以降は興味、必要に応じて拾い読みといったところでしょうか。

    私としては、デプロイメントパイプラインという概念、余さず自動化を試みる精神、そのあたりに感銘を受けました。

    立場上、このような開発プロセスの意思決定に関わる機会は少ないのですが、機会があれば構成管理、スモークテストの導入あたりから着手してみようと思います。

    『git どころか subversion もない、デプロイは FTP と ssh で行う。検証環境で検証して、

    リリース判定資料を作成し、内容よりも文章の『てにをは』に文句をつけられながらも

    承認を得てやっと本番環境に適用。検証環境と本番環境との環境差異によって障害発生』という

    前時代的なことをやっていた経験からすると、眩しすぎる内容。

    そんな前時代に生きている私には、構成管理およびリリース管理の成熟度モデル」が役に立ちました。

    『このような成熟度モデルがあるが、このモデルに当社を当てはめると、如何に当社が未熟か分かります』と

    資料にまとめて上司に持ちかけ、構成管理の必要性を訴求、導入の助力になりました。

    CI/CD に関することを包括的に解説している書籍を探していた際に見つけた。各要素を個別に概要を、または詳細を解説する書籍は世に溢れているが、本書は頭からお尻までギリギリ事例を想定できるレベルの抽象度で解説されている。

    実際にそれってどうするの？という部分は多々あるが、基本的に本書を起点に詳細な部分の具体化、ツールの使い方は各ドキュメントを参照すれば良い。

    未だに数百億、数千億を投資ししているプロジェクトでも未だに手動テスト、手動デプロイが横行している。CTO，CIO，各プロマネは何が自分たちはできてないのかを理解するためにもぜひ読んでほしい。ボトムアップではここにはたどり着けない。
