Life in 1472 Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Long before he released his first solo album, Jermaine Dupri established himself as a hip-hop hitmaker to be reckoned with. He sent Kris Kross, Da Brat, and Xscape to the top of the charts, provided hit remixes for the likes of Dru Hill, and ran the So So Def label -- all before he decided to launch a solo career with Jermaine Dupri Presents: Life in 1472 in 1998. Like many producers, Dupri has surrounded himself with an all-star cast of guest performers, all to make the spotlight a little less harsh. As it turns out, he needn't worry about his own skills -- he's a fine rapper, putting such peers as Puff Daddy to shame -- but all the other rappers and singers help make Life in 1472 feel like a real party. It's one of the few star-studded records to actually work, precisely because JD is such a talented producer -- he crafts slamming tracks with real bass grooves and catchy hooks. Life in 1472 drags a little in the middle, like almost any party, but the vibes are good throughout, and it creates some nice memories, which is enough to make it a top-notch debut.

Only people who grew up in the 1990s or those who have some serious musical taste no matter what generation they grew up in, can appreciate music like what's on Life in 1472.

Jermaine Dupri (JD) was respected back in 1998 for the lyricism and beats he put forth on this album. But what a lot of people fail to realize about this album and with JD's musical career period, was that he knew how to assemble and bring together rap and R&B talent on his solo albums, compilation albums, and albums that he guest starred on or produced.

Life in 1472 was mainly a rap album, but there was also an R&B/pop jam on here like Sweetheart (track 5) and an R&B slow jam like track 13 (Lay You Down). Mariah slayed track 5 and JD slayed the beat on that song. Track 13 is an underrated slow jam that only JD and the Powell's sisters' true fans appreciate.

The fact that this album went Platinum less than two months after it came out goes to show that the album was hot and that JD and the execs and suits at So So Def, Columbia (Mariah's label at the time), and Sony records knew of the album's commercial appeal.

I was a fan of this album back in the 1998-1999 period, but now that I'm older I appreciate it more for its lyrics and the guest stars on it more than just the beat production on it.
