Ireland joined the African Development Fund (ADF) and the African Development Bank in 2020.

In May 2021, Ireland contributed €150,000 towards Sudan’s arrears clearance.

Irish Aid contributed a total of €6 million to the Africa Climate Change Fund (ACCF) in three tranches of €2 million in December 2022, October 2023, and July 2024.

Ireland focuses its development co-operation on least developed countries (LDCs) and fragile contexts. Ireland’s development cooperation programme aims to reduce poverty, hunger and humanitarian need, with a particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2019, Ireland launched “A Better World”, Ireland’s policy for international development, which provides the framework for Ireland’s expanding development cooperation programme in the decade ahead. It charts a clear way forward to achieve their ambition of a more equal, peaceful and sustainable world. Ireland’s international development priorities, as outlined in “A Better World”, are: Reducing Humanitarian Need, Climate Action, Gender Equality and Strengthening Governance. Most of the funding is spent on agriculture and nutrition programs, health and HIV, education services, and on providing much-needed humanitarian assistance in emergencies. Ireland has rich experience in terms of agriculture, energy, and education services, all areas of relevance to the Bank.

In November 2019, Ireland launched the Government’s Strategy for Africa to 2025. The Strategy covers all countries on the African continent in a single strategic approach engaging political, economic, cultural, and development relations. It seeks to implement Ireland’s policy for international development. The Strategy specifically cites membership and active engagement with the African Development Bank, and other international financial institutions present in Africa, to support inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Ireland spent in climate finance €97 million in 2021 and €121 million in 2022. Ireland has committed to more than doubling its climate finance to reach €225 million annually by the year 2025, and is currently on track to reach that objective.
