The Netherlands joined the African Development Fund (ADF) in 1973 and the African Development Bank in 1983.

The Netherlands is one of the founding/ pioneer contributors to the Climate Action Window (CAW), with its pledged contribution of EUR 100 million over five years. It is the second largest contributor to this window after the UK.

The Netherlands contributed USD 17 million for the Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation (YEI) Trust Fund, and USD 7 million for the Capital Markets Development Trust Fund (CMDTF). Netherlands also supported the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) with EUR 5 million, and the AFAWA Program, both for the Gender Equality Trust Fund and Risk Sharing Mechanism with a EUR 28 million pledge. Most recently, in May 2024, the Netherlands pledged EUR 27 million to the Africa Disaster Risk Financing (ADRIFI) MDTF.

Historically, the Netherlands contributed EUR 25 million to the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) Trust Fund and EUR 33 million to the Multi-Donor Water Partnership Program (MDWPP), both hosted by AfDB by end 2021. Under the revised Strategy of the AfDB-hosted African Water Facility (AWF), RWSSI and MDWPP workstreams were integrated into AWF in 2021 and then the MDTFs closed, with unobligated funding returned to donors, including the remaining Dutch contribution. The Dutch Development Finance Company (FMO) is an investor on the AIF platform.
