The Republic of Türkiye became a member of the African Development Fund (ADF) in August 2013 and of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in October 2013. Membership to the Bank Group has constituted one of the key pillars of Türkiye’s long-term African policy vision.

Relations between Africa and Türkiye have reached the stage of strategic partnerships Based on their ongoing cooperation frameworks and the declarations, the Republic of Türkiye has developed partnerships with African countries in institutional cooperation, trade and investment, health, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, rural development, and small and medium scale enterprises.

As an emerging donor country, Türkiye's approach is based on a combination of humanitarian and development assistance drawn from its own economic and social development experience. In line with its increasing diplomatic presence in Africa, Türkiye has expanded its presence from 12 embassies in 2002 to 44 embassies in 2023. Foreign Economic Relations Board of Türkiye (DEIK) has established business councils with 48 African countries. Trade volume between Türkiye and Africa has grown significantly, reaching USD 37 billion in 2023. Türkiye was accorded an observer status and strategic partner by the African Union. More recently, Türkiye became the first non-regional shareholder of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) via Export Credit Bank of Türkiye (Türk Eximbank).

Joint Initiatives
On November 15-16, 2023, a high-level Bank delegation travelled to Türkiye with the aim of strengthening the partnership between the country and the Bank. During the visit, the delegation had meetings and discussions with the representatives of the Treasury and Finance, Turkish Contractors Association (TMB), public institutions, Türk Eximbank and the DEIK. In coordination with the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, a sideline event was organized during the 2024 Annual Meetings of the AfDB Group in Kenya.

The Bank's cooperation with Türkiye continues to evolve. In May 2024, Türk Eximbank dispatched a mission to the Bank Headquarters to explore new possibilities for collaboration.

The Bank has issued numerous bonds denominated in Turkish Lira and has raised TRY 1,337.4 million since 2009 through 44 transactions. Türkiye's consent to issue bonds denominated in Lira was received in March 2014.
