Regarding "A" and "B" sides--Los Angeles based Aladdin Records used "X" and "Q" on some of their releases. John Dolphin's Cash and Money records used "AA" and "A" designations. (I have examples of these in my collection)

Most record companies wanted to emphasize the side they were promoting. Also don't want a radio station to guess which side to play.

All that said, some labels apparently had the attitude that they'd leave off the A/B designations in the hopes that either side might take off.

That's funny - a Capitol pressing ({Images #1332231 & 1332232}) using RCA matrix numbers?! Evidently, only Columbia deviated in terms of what matrix numbers were on the center labels.

I don't know . . . all Columbia pressings I've seen of this record (including my own copy) have lacquers mastered at RCA's New York studios, with their own RCA Custom matrix numbers stamped on the deadwax and all (albeit with stamped '1350 A' and '1350 B' added on to the respective sides' deadwax).

I expect that Cadence's master numbers (1350 A/B) are aliases for Columbia's ZTSP master numbers ... though we'll never know for certain, unless this is documented and made public. This situation has occurred with other custom pressing jobs, such as those for Warner/Reprise, Mercury/Philips and many others.
