‘It’s a pretty standard pattern. The first reactions come out and are ecstatic, sending expectations and hype to peak levels. Then, more people see it with those thoughts in their heads, and, more often than not, the film doesn’t live up to them. Could The Odyssey buck that trend?…’ (Germain Lussier via Gizmodo)

It turns out that I was wrong about Aisleriot lacking an auto-build feature. If you double click on a foundation pile, it will move any cards it can from tableau to any foundation. You can also apparently get the same effect by pressing the space bar with your mouse hovering over a foundation pile.

This is preferable to the online solitaire I used's habit of always auto-moving pretty much any card to a foundation if possible. That interferes with play, as you may want it left on the tabeau so as to build down on it. I've regularly had to unbuild foundation piles in that game, and sometimes had to use "undo" for the purpose, as there was nothing left on the tableau which could receive the cards. And if you moved a single card while in that undone state, without thereby making the cards ineligible for the foundation pile(s), they'd be immediately moved back.

What's not so great is how I found it. A misclick had triggered auto-build while I was playing. This told me the feature existed. I didn't know what i had done. There was no relevant menu item or icon, or explanation in the help menu. The man page tells me that you can doubleclick on a single card to move it to a foundation, but I saw nothing there about moving all eligible cards at once.

I finally found the information in a thread about an enhancement request. This functionality was not what the enhancement had asked for, but overlapped enough that someone mentioned it.

Per the man page, there's also "excellent Gnome documentation", which may be the same as the documentaiton quoted in said man page, complete with version number. But my search for this specific feature didn't provide a link to this documentation.

FWIW, the Gemini LLM bot in Google search agreed the functionality existed, but gave a description of how to use it that lacked the key detail that you should doubleclick on a foundation rather than on the game in general, or on the card to be moved. Possibly it was actually telling me what I already knew - that you can double-click on a single card in the tableau to automatically move it and only it to a foundation if it is eligible - having conflated two related questions.

[Update: the method involving hitting the space bar while the mouse points at a foundation does not work. But OTOH, the description just said one needed to "hover", not any particular place where the mouse should be hovering. I had guessed "over a foundation card" to match the doubleclick behaviour. So there may be some arcane recipe that actually works - or not. Bad documentation availability; no biscuit!]

‘Scientists have identified evidence of a previously unknown process that may explain how brain cells die in Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). I've been spending much of the weekend going through my mother's, brother's, and sister in law's books, sorting what can be disposed of how. I've found a set of sonograms and a postcard of endearments from my brother to my sister in law. I might be half way through the project, and i am NOT getting sidetracked. Christine's taken some books that touch on her Edward Said inspired interests, my Dad reclaimed the boxed set of books that was going to be a big payday at the the book reseller -- 6¢ books, 11¢ books, but the boxed set of Shelby Foote was gonna be $22 plus.  I bought home some books that didn't scan as salable. Most of the non-salable fiction is headed to the Friends of the public library. The Book Club books that haven't slipped my attention are going to the "share shacks" at the dump as well as books written in, damaged, and covering topics like late 90s congressional record and tax code. Dad took the massive case law compendiums.

We saw Jaws in the theater yesterday afternoon, which was delightful. I've only seen it with Christine and her sister before, annually watching it -- first by accident at Memorial Day, then when we realized the date was wrong, July 4th. That and Gettysburg. Really, someone needs to do some mashup of all the generals talking about it being good ground.

Since that was very near Trader Joe's, and it was open,  i went there and spent some gift card on olives and olives and pestos that don't have cashews or walnuts.

The heat is astounding with the front yard recording heat indices of 120° twice and 123°. It's going to make seasonal 106° heat indices feel fine.

‘There is an arrogance to assuming that if conscious, sentient beings exist somewhere else in the universe, they’d probably look a lot like us. According to a new paper by philosophers Eric Schwitzgebel of the University of California, Riverside, and Jeremy Pober of the University of Lisbon, if consciousness exists beyond Earth, it could take forms we can’t even imagine, and it might not even inhabit anything we’d recognize as a body….’ (via VICE)

‘I say this with some sincerity: I am not actually sure if Donald Trump knows how to read. Sure, he can read a chyron on Fox News, or a mean tweet posted about him by Chuck Schumer, but when it comes to an actual, physical book, the extent of his literacy is up for debate. As evidence, look no further than the latest installment of the YouTube video series Storytime with the Second Lady, in which Usha Vance welcomes guests to read books to children. A seemingly simple enough task that past guest readers — from Danica Patrick to Cheryl Hines to Vice President JD Vance — have handled without much of an issue. As for Donald Trump, he doesn’t so much read as he observes and, at various points, describes the pictures featured in the book in question, Presidents Play! by Jonathan Pliska….’ (Alex Young via Consequence)

‘It’s common knowledge that ticks can spread infections that cause serious illnesses, including Lyme disease. Now health officials are trying to raise awareness of a lesser-known problem: a life-threatening allergy to meat triggered by tick bites.

The problem, known as alpha-gal syndrome, was first linked to a particular species of ticks about 15 years ago. But cases are on the rise as more people report symptoms such as hives, diarrhea and itchiness after eating as little as a mouthful of meat and — in some cases — dairy. The allergy doesn’t impact consumption of seafood or poultry. Chicken, turkey and eggs are all OK to eat.

For years, the standard treatment has involved avoiding foods that come from cows, pigs and lambs while carrying an epinephrine injector in case of medical emergency. But regulators recently approved the first drug for the condition, and more therapies may be on the way.

Here’s what to know about alpha-gal syndrome…’ (Matthew Perrone via AP News)

There are many things about living in a very Red state that is annoying but one that actually grosses me out is the lacks environmental laws here. Before we moved here I'd mentioned to Chris that we were looking forward to being able to swim all Summer long from the house's dock. He said that it wasn't safe for regular people and with my immune system I'd be esp at risk.
You see, unlike most places, you can put your septic tank and leach field right up to the water. A few yrs before we moved the state stopped testing since it always came back bad and it messed with Tourism.
So, the last 2 weeks the water's been over 80F, the air the high 90's. Our neighbors, family and grandkids have been in every weekend and some weekdays. No one uses the dock shower. Just from water to food then back in again.
Don't be surprised if the TN news has outbreaks of everything from explosive diarrhea to brain-eating amoebas this Summer.
ICK!!!!!
Cheers,
Pat
