Level-up student projects with the new GitHub Copilot coding agent The best learning happens when developers can focus on design and logic—not wiring up CI or refactoring boilerplate. Our new coding agent turns Copilot into a full teammate that does exactly that. How it works • Assign an issue in GitHub (or ask in VS Code) • The agent spins up a secure, customizable Actions VM • It analyses the repo with RAG + Model Context Protocol, writes code, tests, and docs • Commits land in a draft PR you can inspect line-by-line • Existing branch protections & review rules stay intact—no code merges without a human 👍 Early trials show the agent excels at low-to-medium complexity tasks—perfect for coursework, hackathons, and research prototypes—while giving students clear logs that reveal its reasoning step-by-step. Copilot coding agent is available today for Copilot Enterprise and Copilot Pro+ users, with IDE support extending to VS Code, Xcode, Eclipse, JetBrains, and Visual Studio. 🔗 Dive into the full announcement to see setup tips, security defaults, and classroom-ready examples: https://lnkd.in/d3dxS9a2

Maintainers are the steady hands behind every open-source innovation. During this Maintainer Month we asked MLH Fellowship mentors to nominate projects where student Fellows made measurable impact. Consul .NET — 14 pull requests merged and API docs revitalised, boosting productivity for .NET developers. GR-OSS security audits — Fellow Nima Fallah reviewed 21 repositories and opened 188 security issues, giving maintainers a clear, data-driven roadmap to harden their code. AudioSeal / VideoSeal — Fellow Ayush Bhardwaj trained a new audio-watermark network and helped extend the technique to video, protecting AI-generated content. GitHub Copilot now has a coding agent embedded right where you already collaborate with developers: on GitHub. And yes, you can access it from VS Code too. 🤖 When you assign one or more issues to Copilot, it responds with a 👀 reaction and spins up a secure sandbox using GitHub Actions. It clones the repo, configures the environment, and analyzes the codebase with RAG powered by GitHub code search. The coding agent can use local tools and MCP servers, configured by you. As the agent works, it regularly commits its changes to a draft pull request and updates the pull request’s description. It can only push to its own branch, while existing policies like branch protection still apply in exactly the way you’d expect. And of course, nothing goes out without human approval – because the human developer is always the one in control. Using state-of-the-art models, the agent excels at low-to-medium complexity tasks in well-tested codebases, from adding features and fixing bugs to extending tests, refactoring code, and improving documentation. This is all about keeping you in the magical flow state that inspired your love for coding in the first place ✨ Built around an integrated, secure and fully customizable development environment powered by GitHub Actions, the Copilot coding agent is amplifying human developers with trust by design. And these protections aren’t just for us: as the new home of AI agents, we’re making the same primitives available to partners to ensure an open ecosystem for agentic peer programming. https://lnkd.in/et-K4-S6
