Federal agency obligations for research and experimental development (R&D) reached an all-time high of $190.2 billion in FY 2021, an increase of $22.7 billion (13.6%) from FY 2020. Of the $190.2 billion in federal R&D in FY 2021, $35.6 billion were from COVID-19 pandemic-related stimulus funds.
