For long, several barriers were subjected to high variable temperature cycles (landfill sites for waste disposal, deep barriers for radioactive storage, ...). However, until now, waste sorting is not performed, that's why; for example landfills received a variety of organic and inorganic components. Presence of such materials can lead to serious environmental threats, especially if cracks arise within landfill covers since they are expected to experience cycles of saturation and drying. In fact, these landfill liners are commonly built by clayey soils (it is also the case for several deep barriers), and many previous works have shown that efficiency of these covers are greatly affected by apparition of crack pattern within clayey soil subjected to successive wetting-drying cycles. Their mechanics are simple compared to other types of drones and their possibilities in flight are greater. For example, they can take-off vertically. In this essay, I would like to explore an aspect of Flusser’s work, which despite its significance has received little attention so far: the relationship between music and mathematics and the complex mediatic dialectics of sound, number, image and word that goes with it. I would like to focus on two related texts, which although written 22 years apart show some remarkable parallels with regard to this issue: The History of the Devil (1963) and Into the Universe of Technical Images (1985). Other important aspects that would have to be taken into consideration, are the relationship between hearing and seeing, sound and image, which Flusser assigns in his lectures on communicology in the 1970s (Flusser 1996b) to the two fundamental forms of dialogue in the West: the Jewish and the Greek. The subject of study in the article is the formulation of a modern concept of improving the quality of work of optical recognition systems by using a set of various algorithms for preprocessing document images at the user's discretion. The research synthesizes algorithms that compensate for external negative influences (unfavorable geometric factor, poor lighting conditions when photographing, the effect of noise, etc.). The methods used imply a certain sequence of data preprocessing stages: geometric transformation of the original images, their processing with a set of various filters, image equalization without increasing the noise level to increase the contrast of images, the binarization of images with adaptive conversion thresholds to eliminate the influence of uneven photo illumination. In order to explore a pre-clinical method to evaluate if [18F]FDG is valid for monitoring early response, we investigated the uptake of FDG in Multicellular tumour spheroids (MTS) without and with treatment with five routinely used chemotherapy agents in breast cancer. The response to each anticancer treatment was evaluated by measurement of the [18F]FDG uptake and viable volume of the MTSs after 2 and 3 days of treatment. The effect of Paclitaxel and Docetaxel on [18F]FDG uptake per viable volume was more evident in BT474 (up to 55% decrease) than in MCF-7 (up to 25% decrease). Doxorubicin reduced the [18F]FDG uptake per viable volume more noticeable in MCF-7 (25%) than in BT474 MTSs. Tamoxifen reduced the [18F]FDG uptake per viable volume only in MCF-7 at the highest dose of 1 microM. No effect of Imatinib was observed. The 1971 eruption represents a benchmark in the recent history of Etna volcano. From a volcanological point of view, this eruption was characterised by complex intrusive dynamics associated with significant ground deformation that induced the activation of the Moscarello seismogenic fault and the formation of a new summit crater: the Southeast Crater. At the same time, the 1971 event marks an important change in the eruptive style and composition of the magma towards products richer in K. It is no coincidence that, over the next fifty years, there would be an increase in the frequency of summit and flank eruptions and associated output rate. Many tasks in human-computer-interaction, especially in humanoid robots, require the detection of faces and localization of facial landmarks in images and videos. While the task is considered to be solved for controlled scenarios, most existing approaches are limited to a pose-range of up to half-profile view. Only recently, more holistic approaches [5] have been published able to cope with uncontrolled scenarios. In our approach, we adapt a fast cascaded Wavelet Vector Machine detector [3] from face to facial landmark detection and improve its accuracy by combining it with a 3D face model [4]. As a first application, we use the obtained landmarks with a tree (ERT, [2]) for head pose estimation up to full profile view and show how inaccuracies in the detected landmarks influence performance.

The structure of rhesus rotavirus was examined by cryoelectron microscopy and image analysis. Three-dimensional reconstructions of infectious virions were computed at 26- and 37-A resolution from electron micrographs recorded at two different levels of defocus. The major features revealed by the reconstructions are (a) both outer and inner capsids are constructed with T = 13l icosahedral lattice symmetry; (b) 60 spikelike projections, attributed to VP4, extend at least 100 A from the outer capsid surface; (c) the outer capsid, attributed primarily to VP7, has a smoothly rippled surface at a mean radius of 377 A and is perforated by 132 aqueous holes ranging from 40-65 A in diameter; (d) the inner capsid has a "bristled" outer surface composed of 260 trimeric-shaped columns of density, attributed to VP6, which merge with a smooth, spherical shell of density at a lower, mean radius of 299 A, and which is perforated by holes in register with those in the outer capsid; (e) a &...

We have used electron cryo-microscopy and image analysis to examine the native structure of immature, protease-deficient (PR − ) and mature, wild-type (WT) Moloney murine leukemia virus (MuLV). Maturational cleavage of the Gag polyprotein by the viral protease is associated with striking morphological changes. The PR − MuLV particles exhibit a rounded central core, which has a characteristic track-like shell on its surface, whereas the WT MuLV cores display a polygonal surface with loss of the track-like feature. The pleomorphic shape and inability to refine unique orientation angles suggest that neither the PR − nor the WT MuLV adheres to strict icosahedral symmetry. Nevertheless, the PR − MuLV particles do exhibit paracrystalline order with a spacing between Gag molecules of ≈45 Å and a length of ≈200 Å. Arenaviruses are rodent-borne agents of diseases, including potentially lethal human hemorrhagic fevers. These enveloped viruses encapsidate a bisegmented ambisense single-stranded RNA genome that can be packaged in variable copy number. Electron cryomicroscopy and image analysis of New World Pichinde and Tacaribe arenaviruses and Old World lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus revealed pleomorphic enveloped particles ranging in diameter from ∼400 to ∼2,000 Å. The surface spikes were spaced ∼100 Å apart and extended ∼90 Å from the maximum phospholipid headgroup density of the outer bilayer leaflet. Distinctive stalk and head regions extended radially ∼30 and ∼60 Å from the outer bilayer leaflet, respectively. Coronavirus particles are enveloped and pleomorphic and are thus refractory to crystallization and symmetry-assisted reconstruction. A novel methodology of single-particle image analysis was applied to selected virus features to obtain a detailed model of the oligomeric state and spatial relationships among viral structural proteins. Two-dimensional images of the S, M, and N structural proteins of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus and two other coronaviruses were refined to a resolution of ∼4 nm. Proteins near the viral membrane were arranged in overlapping lattices surrounding a disordered core. Trimeric glycoprotein spikes were in register with four underlying ribonucleoprotein densities. However, the spikes were dispensable for ribonucleoprotein lattice formation. The ribonucleoprotein particles displayed coiled shapes when released from the viral membrane.
