Given the actions Twitter took in the last week to incite violence against scientists, ban reporters from the platform, and disband their Trust & Safety Council the night before a key meeting — I’m not posting or replying on Twitter anymore. Find me at

And no, it’s not because of that tweet alone. It’s because of all of it, especially tonight’s news: “Twitter on Monday night abruptly dissolved its Trust and Safety Council… unraveling years of work to make the social network safer and more civil”

NEW: New York City has just issued an advisory for everyone to wear a mask in public spaces because COVID levels are high in all 5 boroughs. #BringBackMasks

Today @NYCHealthCommr issued an advisory as NYC faces high levels of COVID-19, flu and RSV. New Yorkers are strongly urged to wear masks in public indoor settings and crowded outdoor settings: on.nyc.gov/3ULqGDZ

Everyone should wear a mask: At all times when in an indoor public setting, including inside stores, offices, lobbies, hallways, elevators, public transportation, schools, child care facilities, and other public shared spaces; In crowded outdoor settings; If you’re sick and unable to separate from others, such as when traveling to and from a health care provider, picking up groceries

🔑 Huge news! Google’s announced that passkeys are available in Google Chrome 108. So we have iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Safari, and Chrome with support. If you’re responsible for a website or app, or its authentication story, it’s time to look at passkeys.

I believe people are better off when we work together, help each other, and solve problems together. This is called living in a society. If I wanted to live in a "hey, everyone fend for yourself" atmosphere, I'd go live off the grid in the woods somewhere.

Fecal bacteria aren’t going away, so we’re going to stop treating your municipal water. Individual actions remain key, so ask your doctor if boiling your water is right for you.

So @Harvard just sent out an email that says "COVID is not going away"... and then cancelling all COVID tracing and mitigation measures university wide. Brilliant.

Today we were ready to work for as long as it took to reach a fair deal, but management walked away from the table with five hours to go. It’s official: @NYTimesGuild members are walking out for 24 hours on Thursday. We know what we’re worth.

It’s almost like the deliberate White House effort to normalize mass infection and mass death, end public health measures and largely disappear the pandemic has led people to substantially underestimate the ongoing risk to themselves and their families and community members

Every developer working in the web should know how to approach thinking through what’s on the page — how to turn content into boxes. This is a must read from Lara Aigmüller.

Thinking about the confusion over the right to speak vs the right to abuse. It’s quite clear in case law. It’s quite confused in our shared culture. There are fantastic books that get into the complexity of Constitutional law & the 1st Amendment. I recommend reading one.

If Investigation projects were scored separately, instead of mixed with the browser scores, the Interop 2022 results would be: • Chrome Dev: 92 • Firefox Nightly: 92 • Safari Technology Preview: 98 • Group investigations: 58

The Investigation projects count for 10% of the overall score. And are still only at 58% complete. Which means each browser’s % of passing tests is much higher than the big numbers at the top…

Yes! Safari Technology Preview on macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur now supports AVIF.
Quote Tweet
I always thought that Safari can only add new image formats if they first get OS-level support. Turns out this is not true: they are adding AVIF to Safari on older MacOS versions too. Does this mean JPEG XL could also be added? @jensimmons webkit.org/blog/13584/rel

This shouldn’t need to be said but if a disabled person points out an event you’re organizing is inaccessible or actively harmful to the disability community, telling them they “can choose not to attend” is exclusionary & ableist. You can choose to make your event accessible.
