Hey maybe charging £3.99/month for a feature that helps people manage their energy consumption and cost is not a good look? Particularly now. Also, evil design pattern, not allowing me out of the intro with only available button ‘start trial’ I had to quit the app.

Hard agree. That is Institutional knowledge and is the biggest value a genuine design system offers. Yes of course they have convenient, easy to use digital goods (components, etc) but what good would they be alone? Without the understanding of and trust in them?

Travelling to London at 06:00. It means, Driving, parking, trains, tube, walking, checking in. Post codes, confirmation codes, QR codes, booking numbers, etc. Just me who copy-pastes all the key things into a notes app so they are all to hand? Instead of trawling 100's of emails!

I used to be able to hack away on side-projects and personal websites in the evenings and at weekends but it feels like since the pandemic that has totally gone. I can't concentrate or focus long enough. Just me? I miss being in the 'flow' on outside projects. Such a slog now.

Having the name 'Paul Smith' (a VERY common name) means regularly receiving quite sensitive emails by mistake, to my personal and professional email addresses. Today's is quite the data breach. Not many systems/UIs seem to catch this issue. 'Did you mean, *this* Paul Smith?"

Perhaps I needed a set of principles for how best to use my well intentioned skills and time to contribute to community? Because that's what I/we want. To help. ❤️

I rectified this but it was a good lesson. First my friends working on the prototype kit were already well aware of the issue I was trying to address. Secondly if I had 'radiated intent' I might have been able to contribute to their efforts and not create a potential problem.

...ensuring prototypes are published responsibly and password protected. My side-project solution didn't factor that in and potentially could have got the user in trouble (mistaken for a real service, etc). Also may have generated support questions for the kit maintainers.

"This is great" I thought and shared it, knowing plenty of people who would use it.. BUT what I was forgetting was some of the important issues the design system and prototype kit maintainers have worked hard to address. In this case...

All good questions. Like 'working in the open' vs 'open source' there is quite a difference that on the surface isn't abundantly clear... To use myself as an example, I recently shared a thing to run the prototype kit without installing it on a local machine..

Looking forward to reading Multiplied by . If you work in/around creating public sector policy or services put this book on your work reading list! - The 'being bolder with data' section is very relevant to my domain at the moment. Thanks Ben!

My copy of 'Multiplied' book by Ben Holliday lay on my desk next to a large cup of Tea in an official House of Commons bone china cup. Alexa is lit up in the background and a post it note is to the side.

And there it is. Two and a half years, multiple whistleblowing stories and several inspection reports later, GMP finally ditches that bloody computer system. A very expensive lesson to leaderships everywhere who stick their fingers in their ears.

Another example I was thinking of was: which I think started in the Home Office? GOV has lots of smart hardworking people that's for sure. I just hope the 'glue work' is not unpicked at some level by too many alternates not feeding back to GDS and Depts.

P.S - That said I can see a bunch of issues and comments raised in the official community backlog with some of these iterations and suggested components. So bravo!
