We’ve been talking about it. You’ve been asking for it. We’ve been working on it. Today, we launched it: the image description reminder! It’s live to 10% of global Twitter across Android, iOS, and Web. 🧵 (1 of 6)
Screenshot of the image description reminder modal. The text says: Don’t forget to make your image accessible. Good image descriptions are concise yet detailed. Be sure to summarize or write out any text in the image itself. Your description makes Twitter accessible to people with disabilities, and everyone who wants more context. You can turn off this reminder in Accessibility Settings. The first button says Add descriptions. The second button says Not this time.

The choice is now yours: the closed caption toggle is now available for everyone on iOS and Android! Tap the “CC” button on videos with available captions to turn the captions off/on.

Video captions or no captions, it’s now easier to choose for some of you on iOS, and soon on Android. On videos that have captions available, we’re testing the option to turn captions off/on with a new “CC” button.
The transparent closed caption button. It moves up to the top right corner of a video of a person and someone in a gorilla costume walking together and talking. The video is tapped and pauses. The closed caption button is tapped, captions appear and read, “Anyway so now I’m stuck with like 500 bananas.” The filled-in closed caption button takes up the screen. Text appears: “Now testing Closed Caption Toggle”.

Join me for a discussion with Rob Gallo. We will be reminiscing about developing screen readers for Windows, our experiences working with ARIA in the early days, and our journeys with accessibility over the years. Set a reminder for my upcoming Space!

We had to include an example of a Twitter account that’s nailing image descriptions. consistently delivers with clear, focused image descriptions that add value to the Tweet content they publish.

What’s that Space bar at the top of Home? It shows Spaces that people you follow are speaking in/listening to. Tap in to join or scroll down on the TL to dismiss the bar. Choose who can see your Spaces listening activity from Settings & privacy > Privacy & safety > Spaces
Two iOS phone screens. The screen on the left shows the Home timeline with the Space bar at the top with icons for three live Spaces. The screen on the right shows the settings page for Spaces listening activity –– "Allow followers to see which Spaces you're listening to" is toggled on.

. always has delicious image descriptions because he often Tweets images of his (mis)adventures making homemade pizzas!

I made pizza with my kids today. Unfortunately, I left the chimney cap on and the oven got very near 1000F. Crispy pies as a result, tasted good tho! Customary gratuitous animation

A quick explainer about the differences between closed captions, open captions, and subtitles.
Quote Tweet
Because I feel like not everyone knows this: Closed captions are captions that you can turn on and off. Open captions are permanently burned or embedded into a video and cannot be turned off. Subtitles are language specific captions. They can be closed or open.

We've gotten a lot of feedback about how to improve the image description (or alt text) experience on Twitter. Today, we're launching 2 features to 3% of Twitter across Android, iOS, and Web: the public ALT badge and exposed image descriptions. 🧵 (1 of 6)

Screenshot of a published Tweet with an image of a cup of espresso. The exposed image description appears above the ALT badge and says: A small white mug with a tiny loop handle, with a shot of deep brown espresso and a light brown crema on top. The mug sits on a small white saucer on a medium brown wooden table.
