Still waiting for the modern take on Stoker’s Dracula that preserves the source material’s epistolary framing by relating the events of the story through a series of conveniently colour-coded chat logs.
Just wanted to give a shout-out to all the fic writers who write in English even when it isn’t their first language: you are the glue that holds this community together.
This weekend I was writing for a bit, when I got sucked into the "what ifs". You know, like:
What if this isn't good?
What if people don’t like the dialogue?
What if I'm telling this story wrong?
And I ended up closing the doc and taking a break - stuck in a little web of self-doubt.
But then today, I was thinking about as a reader how I never think like that. How I'm always just excited to see where a story goes, to discover the twists and turns, or just get caught up in the emotions and dialogue. I don't sit there and think "well, I would've told the story this way". I enjoy it, just the way it is.
So although I’m still probably going to worry, I am going to try to remind myself - no one else can tell your story the way you can. That if you’re able to... write what makes you happy, what you think and feel should happen.
And I am sure people will love it.
My take on fic writing is that I don't care what actually happened in canon.
- but I do need to get the price of tulips in 1850's Paris right because that's how I'm letting you guys know that my ignorance of the source material is a hard-earned and intentional kind of bliss.
