The remit of the UCD Digital Library is to maximise the availability of collections of primary source material for use within an academic and research environment by providing online access to digitised copies of material held in several UCD repositories, as well as partnered external repositories. These digital surrogates represent authentic copies of the analogue and digital originals and their use is governed by the terms and conditions prescribed by the parent repository or required by its extant deposit agreements, collection procedures or acquisition policies.
All digital content is the property of the University College Dublin (or participating repository, if so noted) and may be subject to copyright and reuse licenses. Where known, copyright holders are identified in the records for the digital content. The administration of copyright and all other intellectual property rights in the original content rests with the parent repositories cited within the descriptive information and introductory sections for each collection.
Digital content which is out of copyright is marked as being in the Public Domain. Please note, that ancillary copyright may exist for Public Domain material and will be reflected in the reuse licenses.
This content is being made available solely for the purposes of research and education and as an alternative to directly accessing the analogue originals, as per the agreements with the parent repositories and owners. Duplication of this content, other than as permitted by copyright legislation or authorised by the parent repository, is prohibited. Non-conformance to the terms of use could result in action being taken at the discretion of the parent repository with an ownership interest, and may include legal action against the user.
Any proposed use of the UCD Digital Library digital material for purposes other than research or education, such as for commercial activities, should be directed to UCD Digital Library, giving the image permalink, detailing the collection to which the image belongs, and the purpose for which the image is to be used. UCD Digital Library will then direct the reuse request to the appropriate parent repository, or copyright holder.
It is the responsibility of the user to seek and obtain permission for any subsequent reuse of UCD Digital Library content that is not for use within an academic or research environment, such as publication (including website and other electronic means), broadcasting and deposit in third party repositories from the copyright holder. Use of the digital content for commercial purposes may be entertained by the parent repository, but can in no way be guaranteed, and should never be presumed. Please contact the UCD Digital Library for further details. Please note that some parent repositories may charge for commercial reuse.
The UCD Digital Library has obtained the agreement of the parent repositories to present these collections for research and academic usage, and has endeavoured to obtain the permission of all relevant rights owners for material being made available within the UCD Digital Library infrastructure. Any putative use of material by UCD Digital Library without the permission of the relevant rights owners should be drawn to the attention of the UCD Digital Library as soon as possible.

Copyright of all the descriptive and other metadata elements, including their arrangement and presentation, in both the derived digital versions and the original database, rests, unless otherwise stated, with the UCD Digital Library in particular and UCD in general. Metadata is licensed under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, and as such, any use of metadata elements should be acknowledged and cited.
UCD Digitial Library adheres to the Data Protection Act 2018, and complies with internal University College Dublin policies around the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), found online at: http://www.ucd.ie/gdpr/policiesprocedures/.
As most data residing within the UCD Digital Library is made available on an Open Access basis, users are not generally asked to create an account or login.
With the small number of resources to which access is restricted, users are asked to complete a registration form that requests access to the restricted resources, which they send directly to the parent repository for processing; upon approval, users basic details are added to the UCD Digital Library Access Control Lists. User details are deleted one year after the last login by the user and are only required for authentication purposes.
UCD Digital Library utilises anonymised user analytics to track usage of the digital collections for statistical purposes. Data collected includes geographic regions, internet domain, language, pages viewed and for how long. This information is used to report back to parent repositories on their individual collections, and to help UCD Digital Library to improve the user experience.
UCD Digital Library utilises cookies to help users to navigate efficiently and to perform certain functions, and to track how users use the website. The cookies do not return any personal information about the user to UCD Digital Library, and are stored locally on the user’s computer. UCD Digital Library aligns with the UCD Cookie Policy, found here: http://www.ucd.ie/cookie-policy/.
Any information users provide in an email to the UCD Digital Library email account is not made available to any third parties, other than those working with the UCD Digital Library on normal University business. It is used by the UCD Digital Library only in accordance with the purpose for which the user provided the information and will only be retained for as long as required for the purpose.

Specific collections or objects from the UCD Digital Library should be cited using the following convention: title of the object or collection, followed by the source repository, the copyright holder of the original material, copyright holder of the digital image, and UCD Library as publisher. It should also include the permanent link. A worked example for an individual object from a collection is given below:

Formed in 2009, the Archive Team (not to be confused with the archive.org Archive-It Team) is a rogue archivist collective dedicated to saving copies of rapidly dying or deleted websites for the sake of history and digital heritage. The group is 100% composed of volunteers and interested parties, and has expanded into a large amount of related projects for saving online and digital history.
