There’s a lucky charm in outer space 🍀 The “shamrock nebula” imaged by our WISE spacecraft features a stellar nursery wrapped in a blanket of dust, colored green in this infrared view. Read more:

Scattered throughout the region are small clusters of bright red objects, especially near the upper left portion of the image. These are likely "Young Stellar Objects," surrounded by cocoons of dense dust. Young Stellar Objects are stars in their earliest stages of life, just coming together and beginning to start their nuclear fusion. The clouds of gas and dust surrounding each star provide the material from which future planets might possibly form. The colors used in this image represent specific wavelengths of infrared light. Blue and cyan (blue-green) represent light emitted at wavelengths of 3.4 and 4.6 microns, which is predominantly from stars. Green and red represent light from 12 and 22 microns, respectively, which is mostly emitted by dust. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA

This image shows an infant star consisting of an incandescent jet of gas traveling at supersonic speeds. As the jet collides with material surrounding the still-forming star, the shock heats this material & causes it to glow. The result is colorfully wispy structures!

Permafrost — soil frozen for at least two years — can store carbon for thousands of years. As permafrost thaws in a warmer climate, carbon emissions could spike. Scientists are looking at ways to combine study of permafrost from the ground, air & space.

We hope this isn’t polarizing, but we think magnetic fields are super cool — and so does Dr. Yasmina Martos. 🧲 She studies magnetic fields both on Earth and over 500 million miles away on and around Jupiter! Learn more:

🌈 Looking for the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow? ’s mirrors are coated with a microscopically thin layer of gold, optimizing them to reflect infrared light, seeing beyond the visible rainbow to study light from the early universe.

Picture of the James Webb Space Telescope primary mirror in the cleanroom. The mirror is made up of 18 individual gold segments, each shaped like a hexagon. The mirror is laying down on its back in the image

The Solar Dynamics Observatory sees the Sun in a variety of wavelengths to study parts of the Sun invisible to human eyes. One wavelength colorized in bright green captures light emitted by iron-18 (Fe XVIII) at temperatures of about 10.8 million °F.

🌳 Earth’s lush green forests play an important role in storing carbon. The GEDI instrument on the measures the height as well as the structure of forests, an important piece of monitoring how much carbon is stored around the planet.

A line graph, with a horizontal dark green line running across the graph, at about 20 meters. Lighter green spikes extend from the dark green line, some reaching up to the 50-meter marker. The graph is labeled "GEDI sees to, and through, the trees in South Carolina." An arrow pointing at the lighter green spikes is labeled "Dense upper canopy." An arrow pointing at the dark green horizontal line is labeled "Open understory"

Legend has it St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland…did they make it all the way to space? 🐍 spotted NGC 2835 in the constellation Hydra. This “snake eye” galaxy has a supermassive black hole in its center.

When atoms and molecules in Earth’s upper atmosphere get excited by sunlight, they glow green (and purple and red and yellow). Known as airglow, these swaths of colored light mark the region where Earth’s atmosphere meets space.

City of stars, are you shining just for me? 💫 An image taken by shows a dimming galaxy, NGC 1947. Despite being home to millions of stars, NGC 1947 has lost most of its star-forming material—leaving this galaxy to continue fading with time.
