    Get ready for 's final unfolding! We'll have live coverage on social media and NASA TV as Webb deploys its second and final primary mirror wing, with our broadcast beginning no earlier than 9am ET (14:00 UTC) Sat., Jan. 8:

    Webb's iconic honeycomb-shaped mirror, composed of 18 hexagonal mirrors, sits in a giant white clean room in a processing facility. The gold coating reflects the thick crane beams on the ceiling. In the center of the mirror is the blunt cone-shaped instrument that will collect light reflected from its secondary mirror that will sit 24 feet across from the primary mirror and will be attached to booms extending from the sides.

    Shields up! has completed the tensioning of its tennis-court-size sunshield. This five-layered shade will protect the telescope from the heat of the Sun, Earth and Moon, helping it in infrared light. Details & next steps:

    Why is 's sunshield shaped like a kite? In short, it's exactly the shape & size it needs to be. The iconic profile lets the telescope tilt back and forth to observe more of the universe. Plus, it helps radiate heat from the sides. Take a look:
