    So why end the count now? The state's tally is now close to what our team would produce with ours. Using the state data allows our teams to focus on analysis and pursue the next big story. That doesn't change our commitment to keep tracking COVID19 until this crisis is over.

    In fall of 2020, we proposed a collab with the LA Times who were doing their own count to better serve readers throughout the state. assembled a crew and established the California Covid Data Coalition. More on that historic collab here:

    Why do the monumental work of visiting 61 health agency websites and recording cases and deaths 4 times every day? When we started this project in March 2020, doing it that way got more accurate numbers days ahead of the official state tally. Invisible, important journalism.

    After 17 months of counting here at , we've put our manual coronavirus count to bed. It's been almost a year after we started this partnership to count cases in California. We're relying on the state directly for that data going forward 📊
