Michael Kitchen returns to the screen as Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle, a man of scrupulous integrity who, having survived the First World War, solved crime in Hastings during the Second and now finds himself working with MI5 to keep the country safe, while bringing justice to those who deserve it. This series includes three powerful new films:

HIGH CASTLE: Foyle is drawn into the world of corrupt Nazi businessmen when a University Professor is found brutally murdered in a London park. When it transpires the Professor was working as a translator in Nuremberg, Foyle realises there are powerful people trying to conceal secrets from the war.

TRESPASS: Tasked with ensuring security at a high level Palestinian conference, with signs that a plot to bomb the conference maybe under way, Foyle faces a race against time to uncover not only the truth, but where the truth lies. Meanwhile Sam is determined to help a young boy in Adam’s constituency when she realises his life may be in danger because he cannot afford hospital care.

ELISE: When his colleague Hilda Pierce is nearly killed in an attempted assassination, Foyle must re-examine her top secret role during the war to find out if there was a traitor at the heart of the Special Operations Executive.

I know that these last three 'Foyle's' didn't get the best of reviews in some of the TV mags, but I thought they were very good - especially the last one (Elise) - this was very dramatic.

Like the whole Foyle's series, the storylines were gripping and the characters engaging and familiar.

I'm not going to write any spoilers here - just to say that, if you love Foyle's War and have the other 7 series, then add this one to your collection.

It looks like this will definitely be the last one - so enjoy it......... But you never know eh!

This is the best Foyle's War of all the series, consisting of three feature-length films, each of which discusses certain aspects of the post-war security situation. The last episode, Elise, is the best of the lot (it is also the playwright's favourite - and Mr Horowitz himself makes a Hitchcockian cameo appearance in the episode). Elise deals with the mistakes made at a high level in the S.O.E. which resulted in a number of operatives' being deliberately sent to certain capture, torture and death in occupied Europe. This episode (inter alia) is about one of those operatives, a beautiful, intelligent young woman. The other main string in this episode is about the organised crime which existed in the post-war period.

Overall this last series is not marred by small slips to the same extent as are the previous series, although in Elise we see a letter addressed to "Ms Pierce" (in those years only the titles Miss or Mrs existed for ladies). But leaving such trivia aside, this DVD is well worth the money. The acting is top-class; and Ellie Haddington is outstanding in her characterization of Hilda Pierce, who was based on a real individual, Vera Atkins (1908-2000), who always regarded her female SOE operatives as "her girls" and saw them off personally on their missions.

In summary, this DVD is riveting entertainment, historically accurate, enlightening, and value for money. The documentary extra features on the disc alone would have been worth the money paid, even without the episodes themselves.

Not quite as edgy but no the less enjoyable

Series 7 and 8 are perhaps not as enthralling as those episodes set in the war but no less of a good watch as series 1 to 6. Some of the edge and humour seems to have been lost in the stories concerning the inevitable aftermath of world war and the cold war.

Having said that I watched series 7 and 8 on two consecutive nights (I don't watch TV having given up my TV licence and having a large number of DVDs and VCR tapes to catch up on) and enjoyed it immensely. The quality of the acting was excellent, the locations and stories of rationing, I still can remember rationing, brought the stories to life.

I cannot praise the series, other than my earlier comments, enough.

One note of caution though, it was ended after series 8 which was opportune unlike other TV series that continued with different leads until only one or two of the original actors survived. I would not like to see FOYLES' WAR continuing in this fashion.

I read that this is the last season of Foyle's War. When there is so much rubbish in television shows coming out of the UK these days, WHY discontinue such a high quality show? If this show is too expensive for its present makers to produce, why isn't someone else stepping up to the plate. Apart from its obvious acting and production quality, it seems to me that the stories of this post war period that Foyle's War is now presenting are very important stories to be told. This is important history that needs to be told, albeit with poetic licence, and television shows are more accessible to most people than library research. These Foyle's War stories surely have much greater worth than the dollars spent on their production.

To the dismay of many, Honeysuckle Weeks has declared that this is the final season of Foyle's War, forever. It certainly feels like the final installment,
considering all that takes place in these episodes. Anthony Horowitz says that he wanted the series to go out on a "high" and I believe it has. Even though it has been three years since Series 7, it is still only 1948-49, but everyone looks older and Honeysuckle Weeks has lost the fresh face looks of her youth.
Married now, and with a baby on the way, she certainly has a matronly appearance, helped in no small part by the depressed post war clothing styles and those dreadful hats! As usual, the production is absolutely spot-on and the quality of this piece is in keeping with all the others. So, with a tear in my eye,
I bid farewell to the best war time period drama ever to come out of the UK. Get this final chapter for your collection.

It is always good to watch Foyle's War, it is one of those easy to watch and quietly engrossing
series that you just couldn't imagine anyone else but Michael Kitchen as the main character Foyle.
Honeysuckle Weekes, what a luscious name, plays his driver and confidante, she also draws one in.
I used to watch this with my dad and when he passed away I didn't watch it for a while.
Now when I take it out to watch, I imagine dad is there watching it with me.
