2021 NASA Science Mission Directorate On-orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing Workshop

The On-orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (OSAM) mission implementation approach has emerged as a national research and development priority. NASA, the Department of Defense, and industry are making significant investments in robotic OSAM missions and orbital demonstrations. This active technical work area holds great potential for collaboration among these different stakeholders to advance science, exploration, commercial interests, and national defense

At the OSAM Workshop key stakeholders and leaders from SMD and other mission directorates, NASA centers and JPL, and the OSAM National Initiative will discuss how OSAM can enable near-term and long-term NASA science goals.

The goal of the workshop is to obtain clarity regarding the following questions:

  • What is the status of current OSAM efforts?
  • How can OSAM enable future NASA science missions?
    • What are key near-term and long-term opportunities?
  • How can SMD prepare for OSAM-based science missions?

Invited speakers will highlight ongoing OSAM projects, technology maturation efforts, and relevant studies, and promote community understanding regarding the future of OSAM.

A set of design reference missions (DRMs) will provide context for discussions on the types of possible OSAM-enabled science missions. Workshop participants will examine the relevance and readiness of these DRMs or other mission concepts to incorporate OSAM and consider the impacts to cost, risk, and science return.

Workshop participants will meet weekly over a six-week period to discuss how to establish collaborative efforts and ensure interoperability among missions, with the goal of programmatically adopting OSAM for SMD missions.
