Google suggests enabling gzip compression before transferring files over the network:

According to the official docs, the firebase_messaging plugin does not support handling data messages in the background. The messages are not handled and the data is 'lost'.
However it is not clear what happens to the message and whether it may affect privacy.
Also, this support is necessary.
