conda environments with
@ApacheArrow are quite large. I had a look at the "why?" and could reduce the size by roughly 50%: https://uwekorn.com/2020/09/08/trimming-down-pyarrow-conda-1-of-x.html … This has the nice side effect that of making basic python=3.8 conda environments also 36% smaller, benefitting the whole ecosystem.Thanks. Very very clear elucidation by
@wesmckinn of the prime bottlenecks that the@ApacheArrow project is hoping to solve! Watch his excellent talk from the@dremio Subsurface conference. https://hubs.li/H0vjsBy0 pic.twitter.com/Fw6J6G0NTG

Google for example depends on
@ApacheArrow for dealing with Parquet files in multiple Google products but has yet to fund Parquet development in any significant way. One Arrow developer from Google helps with it in his free timeShow this threadThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo -
I’ve even spent the last 5 years working to consolidate these efforts into “one place” (
@ApacheArrow) so that there’s more bang for everyone’s buckShow this threadThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo -
I can say from my end it’s been stunning to see how much technical talent the DL ecosystem has hoovered up in recent years, meanwhile there is a ton of fundamental computational work that affects everyone that is being underfunded

I’m OK with this, can we get some more people helping with the boring stuff (data frame libraries, dealing with file formats)?https://twitter.com/fchollet/status/1300137812872765440 …

We just merged initial
@ApacheArrow support into#DuckDB. Now you can run efficiently run arbitrary#SQL on Arrow tables and convert back.#Python example: duckdb.arrow(my_arrow_table).query("a", "SELECT * FROM a").arrow()https://github.com/cwida/duckdb/pull/866 …Thanks. Formed in 2009, the Archive Team (not to be confused with the archive.org Archive-It Team) is a rogue archivist collective dedicated to saving copies of rapidly dying or deleted websites for the sake of history and digital heritage. The group is 100% composed of volunteers and interested parties, and has expanded into a large amount of related projects for saving online and digital history.
