Documentation for the EFS usage is fairly lacking; I would not be expecting a service to stay in the foreground, and even passing the --verbose flag gives very little to work with.
I figured this out after some time, but it seems as though there might be a better way to manage documentation, such as simply alerting people about expected behaviors.
With that being said, I did get this working
