All of these status messages would be more appropriately done with the built-in python 'logging' module
This is grunt-work and probably low on the priority list, but it may be nice to get it done before the code grows too much
We could even create a custom logging handler for the GUI to read, set levels of notices, etc

Running "make" results in errors due to missing references in the Makefile (nbprojects folder)
