In 2017 the Cannes Film Festival decided not to let the films done exclusively for Netflix or another streaming services participate in the Festival, stating that Cannes wants to preserve the traditional way of watching and making films. Many filmmakers protested against this idea, and in 2018 Netflix started a movement to boycott the festival. One of the filmmakers that supported this idea was Alfonso Cuarón. During the production of this film, Roma, he stated on several occasions that festivals and academies should appreciate the films done for these kinds of services. Roma did not screen at the Festival. Later Cuarón and Netflix reluctantly agreed to show the film on theaters so it can compete on Film Festivals. See more »
