User research studies help us improve Google products by allowing us to get feedback directly from our users (that's you!)

During a study we may present you with and gather your feedback on an existing product, a new feature, or even prototypes. We may also interview you about particular daily habits or ask you to keep a log of certain activity types over a given period of time. Study sessions can happen at a Google office, in your home or business, or online through your computer or mobile device. Afterwards, you'll receive a token of our appreciation for your cooperation. Sharing your experiences with us helps inform our product planning and moves us closer to our goal of building something you'll love.

You don't have to be a Google product user or a tech aficionado to sign up

We value input from people that are unfamiliar with our products or the latest web technology, as well as those who are deeply engaged with them. If you've used the Internet in any way before, we want to hear from you!

Getting invited

When you sign up to participate in user studies, we'll use the information you provide to help us search for suitable participants for user studies. We (or an outside agency working on our behalf in accordance with our privacy policy) will only contact you if we want to invite you to participate in a study or need to clarify information that informs such invitations.

The first step is signing up to be contacted for user experience research study sessions

  • Once you fill out the form, you'll be eligible for invitations for user experience research studies. This doesn't commit you to anything - we'll always contact you with information about the particular study and its format before we make any arrangements.
  • When you sign up you can select which of the different types you are available for. Many of our in-person studies take place at our Google offices all over the world.
  • Wherever you are, you may be able to participate in a user study remotely by having a conference through your computer or answering study questions through your smartphone.
  • One good way to increase your chances of being contacted is to fill out as much of the sign up survey as possible so we know what kinds of studies you may be eligible for.
  • The latest version of our sign-up survey is hosted on GoogleRatings.com, which is owned by Google and used for hosting forms and conducting customer and user surveys.

As new studies are launched, we'll contact you if we think you might be good match for the study topic

  • You'll usually hear from us via email: we'll tell you the nature the study and include a link to a questionnaire to assess your eligibility. Fill out the questionnaire with your information and availability, and we'll be in touch directly with you if it looks like you're a good fit.
  • Our in-person sessions will almost always be held during business hours (Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm). If a study is being held in a Google office, you'll need to allow extra time for travel, which is at your own expense, so do keep that in mind when indicating your availability. Remote sessions (held over your computer or smartphone) may take place outside of typical business hours depending on your local time zone.
  • We may follow up with you to request more information from you based on your questionnaire responses.
  • We can't guarantee that you'll be invited to participate in a study, and it may actually be quite some time before you hear from us. Again, the more completely you fill out the sign-up survey, the better your chances of being contacted!

If it looks like you're a good fit based on your questionnaire, we'll invite you to be a participant in the study session

  • We'll follow up with information on how to participate, and whether the study is being held at a Google office, in your home or business, or through your computer or smartphone.
  • Your help in keeping our focus on the user is vital to our mission. While you don't get anything just for signing up here, participation in a study session always entitles you to some token of our appreciation, such as a gift card. Rest assured though that you'll always know exactly what you'll receive before you participate.

Be sure to update your information if anything has changed since you signed up

  • Moved to a new city? Changed your email address? Just complete our update form and we'll see that your information is adjusted.
  • You can stop receiving invitations at any time by completing our opt-out form.
