ASIS 2015 preview: Access control is the name of the game

Sep 21, 2015 at 3:30 UTC | Avigilon
Next week, Avigilon is heading to sunny California to attend ASIS 2015 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, Sept. 28Oct. 1. While the show goes until Oct. 1, the Exhibit Hall is only open until Sept. 30, and here is what you can expect when you drop by our booth (3027). Wireless lock and key Recently, Avigilon introduced Access Control Manager (ACM) integration with Allegion and wireless locking solutions. We have a fun way to demonstrate our new ACM wireless lock integration at our ASIS 2015 booth 3027. Attendees who drop by will get a chance to play UnLock It!, where we will give you a certain number of key cards and a set amount of time to find the right card that opens one of three doors. If you correctly open one of the doors in the given time period, we will enter you into a drawing for a chance to win a smart watch. We will be giving one away for each day the Exhibit Hall is open and will announce each days winner on Twitter as well as in our booth. So be sure to follow us @Avigilon. Unique physical access control solution Making its debut at ASIS 2015 is Avigilon Access Control Manager (ACM) Embedded Controller. Designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses, ACM Embedded Controller features factory-installed software from Avigilon, eliminating the need for costly server components. ACM Embedded Controller is ideal for organizations such as educational facilities, property management companies, health care clinics, retail locations, and other facilities designed with 16 doors or less. Drop by our booth to see ACM Embedded Controller in action. Local recording, central viewing, remote management If you are responsible for monitoring the security of geographically dispersed sites, you will want to see a demo of the Avigilon Control Center (ACC) Edge Solution (ES) HD Recorder while at ASIS 2015. The ACC ES HD Recorder is ideal for centralized monitoring of critical infrastructure such as telecommunications towers and power substations. It offers intelligent monitoring deployed on-site at the network edge; the ability to store high amounts of HD video data remotely; and the ability to view live or recorded video from long distances on demand. Sharper imagery for greater visibility The industrys first 7K HD Pro camera will also be on hand at our ASIS 2015 booth 3027. Come by and see clear, sharp HD images on our 7K wall. Our HD Pro series of cameras recently received a Benchmark Innovation Award. The following image is an example from one of our 7K HD Pro cameras: Smarter preventative protection In addition to our 7K wall, our ASIS booth will have demonstrations of our HD Pro 4K, 4.5K and 5K cameras with self-learning analytics, as well as our HD Dome and HD Bullet cameras with analytics. We designed these cameras to instantly detect and learn the monitored scene upon installation, to keep valuable assets safe. All angles covered Get a demo of the Avigilon HD Multisensor camera while you are visiting us at ASIS 2015. Sep 1, 2015 at 3:30 UTC | Avigilon
How would you answer the question posed in the headline above? The infographic below summarizes the results of an Avigilon-commissioned Forbes survey. We asked professionals about their organizations use of video surveillance technology. The main takeaway? The vast majority of businesses are underutilizing surveillance and monitoring and missing out on some important benefits. Some highlights of the survey include: 58% of respondents do not have video surveillance in place for the majority of their valuable assets Only 4% of businesses currently cover all of their valuable assets with video surveillance Of those with video surveillance, 66% of respondents say that the majority of their valuable assets are not actively monitored by security personnel Only 9% of respondents said all of their valuable assets were actively monitored by security personnel The top 3 reasons why respondents dont actively monitor: Cost-effectiveness Effectiveness of monitoring Inaccuracy/false alarms The survey concluded that implementing a video analytics solution will help address the respondents concerns The infographic was part of a larger set of research that Avigilon and Forbes undertook together to determine how business are currently using video surveillance and analytics. Factoring in Temperatures and Humidity for Camera Installations

Aug 11, 2015 at 4:00 UTC | Avigilon
As we head into the dog days of summer, the need to factor in the outdoor temperature during a camera installation may not be your first priority. When it comes to a cameras ability to function, it is important to keep the operating and storage temperatures in mind. Operating temperature is the range where you can safely operate the device. For example, Avigilons PTZ Pendant cameras with external power have an operating temperature of -45 C to +50 C (-50 F to 122 F) while Avigilons H.264 Dome cameras have an operating temperature of -10 C to +50 C (-14 F to 122 F). Storage temperature is the range where you can safely store the device for any given period of time when powered off. For example, Avigilons PTZ Pendant and H.264 Dome outdoor cameras have a storage temperature of -10 C to +70 C (-14 F to 158 F). In both instances, if the temperature reaches either extremes, then the camera could lose its durability and fail. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind in terms of temperature when installing cameras in outdoor environments: Relative Humidity While it is important to keep temperature in mind, it is actually relative humidity that can play a bigger factor in equipment failure. For example, if you were to install a dome camera during the summer months in an environment with high relative humidity, it could potentially build up condensation on the dome during the cooler winter months and block the cameras view. This is especially true in locations in which the temperature changes very fast. To help compensate for this issue, camera manufacturers put in a fan in the device so air will continuously circulate. This prevents a stagnant environment so water will not condensate on the dome. If you discover moisture in your camera one of the first troubleshooting steps is to determine if there is water building up in the camera or is it just a condensation on the dome. If there is only a small amount of moisture in the dome then the camera was most likely installed during a time of High Humidity. If there is a larger build of up water than there could be a leak. To help remove moisture try removing the dome cover to allow it to adjust to the current relative humidity level. The amount of time you leave the dome or housing off depends on multiple factors, but 10-20 minutes should provide adequate time. If installing cameras during the winter months and the camera were to come from a vehicle or building, remember to also let the camera acclimate to the exterior climate before closing up the camera. This will also help prevent moisture from being trapped inside the camera. Mounting Surface During outdoor installations, people need to consider the surface where the camera will be installed. If there is a temperature transfer from inside the wall (hot) to the camera pendant bracket (cold), air flow inside the bracket needs to be stopped with an appropriate product such as spray-foam or a manufacturer-provided grommet. If the camera is installed on a porous material like concrete, brick, wood, or stucco, it is important to use silicon between the surface and the mounting bracket to prevent moisture from coming inside. Keep these tips in mind to help keep your cameras running in blazing heat and freezing cold. Jul 14, 2015 at 3:00 UTC | Avigilon
Avigilons presence was front and center at the 2015 Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition conference, also known as CVPR. The conference is described by industry insiders as the premier Computer Vision event, drawing other influential technology leaders such as Google, Amazon and Microsoft. Avigilons Director of Video Analytics, Aleksey Lipchin, stated that the CVPR gives you a feeling of major trends and state-of-the-art technology in these fields. This year, Avigilon actively participated in the entire conference for the first time as a Platinum Sponsor, giving us global visibility in the high-tech industry as a leader in innovation. National Safety Month How prepared are you?

Jun 29, 2015 at 4:00 UTC | Avigilon
According to a recent workplace safety study by Staples, only half of employees believe their workplaces are prepared for a severe emergency. Is your workplace prepared? June is National Safety Month, which makes it the perfect time to review your safety plans to make sure you are able to keep your business running during an emergency or threat. Follow these steps to increase preparedness: 1. Identify possible threats - What are the possible threats in your area? What are the critical assets required to keep your business operating in an emergency or threat? Identify any items that your business relies on. 2. Develop a plan - Develop a proactive plan according to each possible emergency and threat, such as fire, extreme weather, active shooter, bomb threat, or hazardous material incident. 3. Practice the plan - Practice the plan regularly to test communication channels and collect feedback. 4. Revise the plan - Plans continually change and evolve according to your business needs and the world around you. In addition, it makes sense to evaluate new technology that may enhance safety procedures. As you develop or revise your safety plans, we recommend that you look for a digital mustering and tracking system that will let you know where your employees are during an emergency. In case of an evacuation, an emergency assembly tracking system can combine the tasks of assembling personnel in a safe location and taking roll-call in a single automated solution. The mustering capability in Avigilon Access Control Manager (ACM) uses information generated from the swiping of access cards to get real-time information on everyone's location. The interactive dashboard, which is accessible from a phone or tablet, lets you see immediately who is in a safe area and who may still be in danger. With a mapping function that provides critical information on people to search for and their likely locations as well as video integration for "eyes on the scene" to locate them, first responders can act quickly to bring people to safety. Avigilons IFSEC International 2015 Blog: The Power to See What Once Could No...

Jun 17, 2015 at 3:30 UTC | Avigilon
There is a lot of talk around 4K being the next big thing in HD video surveillance but for Avigilon, that was so 2012. This year, weve introduced the security industrys first single-sensor 7K camera: the 7K HD Pro. The 7K HD Pro camera was the star of our exclusive media event at IFSEC International 2015 in London, UK at the ExCeL London. So what does 7K mean? That is 7,000 horizontal pixels with 30 million total pixels or 30 MP offering best-in-class image quality. The idea is to get all the evidence and detail you need in one image, said Avigilons Director of Global Product Marketing Willem Ryan. This enables our end users to make quick decisions and capture footage that is immediately actionable. Dr. Mahesh Saptharishi, Avigilons Chief Technology Officer, added that the 7K HD Pro cameras have a 35mm full-frame sensors that are often found in professional DSLR cameras. You get amazing low light performance at 30 MP with amazing forensic detail. You wont be able to tell the difference between images taken with the 7K and those taken by a professional DSLR camera. Ahead of IFSEC 2015, the Avigilon team captured images some of Londons most iconic landmarks. For example, when you view the image of Trafalgar Square, captured by our 7K HD Pro camera, below with the Avigilon Control Center software, you are able to digitally zoom in to get details such as street names or the destination on the bus. The 7K HD Pro provides wide area coverage yet still maintains situational awareness. Ryan then provided a live demonstration of the 7K HD Pro camera, demonstrating one of Avigilons newest models set-up outside the London ExCeL Centre. In the shot below, Ryan showcases a clear a scene from across the Thames, zoomed-in with great clarity. Thats the power of high definition; it offers complete coverage of vast areas along wth the high detail that can be used as evidence. That is the 7K HD Pro, he explained.
