Everyone has been busy buzzing around Four Seasons all morning networking and conducting interviews. Conference halls are filled with tapping sounds of keyboards and of page sliding, pen scratching.

Keynote is now taking place, tune in here for the live stream

Jeff Wike, Head of Technology for Film and TV Production, Dreamworks Animation on stage sharing how Big Data has helped streamline and improve the production process of Kung Fu Panda 3.

In just one film...

  • 296,400 frames in 90 minutes
  • 75,000,000 CPU hours
  • 110,000 transactions per second
  • 10,000+ cores
  • 200+ terabytes of data
  • 500,000,000 files

Amazing amount of big data involved in creating a single movie! Jeff (and Po) shares with the audience how HPE Big Data has helped Dreamworks Animation get to 85-90% server utilization. #SeizeTheData with Dreamworks, one panda at a time!

Fernando Lucini, VP of HPE Haven OnDemand is coming up next to reflect on the state of the industry, how every facet of business is being transformed with Big Data and the future of machine learning.

"A couple of years ago we set out to create APIs that would change the way developers create data-rich applications. The dream was to make the power of Machine Learning easily accessible through a self-service delivery model. Think of it as Machine Learning, Applied. We were lucky in that we had an incredible set of technologies around machine learning and signal processing that our customers were using to turn human information into valuable apps full of context."

Fernando ends his presentation with an exciting Haven OnDemand announcement: "Effective immediately we are offering pricing! Haven OnDemand is open for business with pricing that extends with usage and is backed by enterprise SLAs." Learn more here.

As told by Colin Mahony, Senior VP and general manager for HPE Big Data, the company is targeting both enterprise developers and startups with this service. HPE wants to give them a flexible platform that can grow with them as their needs scale up.

Now that it is commercially available, Haven OnDemand will offer a free tier that limits the number of API calls and storage developers can use. Paid plans start at $10 per month. For the first three months, HPE is also offering an additional 50,000 API units (which roughly equate to API calls) for all paying users.

Keynote ended with Willis Portman, CIO of GSN Games, sharing how he used Big Data to help GSN's 160 million players and viewers have more fun. Who doesn't want to have more fun?!

If you are watching this from the live stream, Willis is doing an excellent job with adding wit and fun to his presentation too!

Next, time to refuel with some coffee and sugary pastries before the breakout sessions.

Session: Machine Learning APIs and Services for Data-Rich Problem Solving

Chris Goodfellow, CTO of Haven OnDemand

Sean Hughes, Chief Community Office of Haven OnDemand

Chris talked about the exciting new possibilities of Machine Learning for developers and data scientists. He walked us through an overview of Haven OnDemand's powerful set of Machine Learning APIs to build next generation applications.

According to Sean, HPE has fostered a global community of developers that use HPE Haven OnDemand through an active global hackathon program and comprehensive resources, docs, tutorials, code libraries and quick-start materials. He also shared with us how this developer community has provided vital feedback to help HPE optimize their offering, and has leveraged HPE Haven OnDemand to create hundreds of innovative applications.

Here's the Haven OnDemand Developer Story video we watched: Neel Mehta, winner of IDHack 2015: Understand Government Spending by Analyzing Open Data

A feedback from a member of the audience: "Good to see that HPE has understood the importance of communities for developer success. And Hackathons are still popular to get developers motivated and creative."

The remaining session was spent diving under the hood of Haven Search OnDemand.

Continuing with my interest in #machinelearningapplied,  my next session will be Startup Use Cases: Power-Boosting Consumer and Enterprise Apps with Machine Learning. This is one of those times where I wish there was more than one of me so I can attend all the sessions.

Let's see how these APIs are actually being used.

In this session, we heard from three exciting new startups that are using Haven OnDemand Machine Learning APIs to power their apps.

  1. Blink is a live stream mobile speed-dating app that focuses on real-time conversation and aims to making dating more human again with Haven OnDemand’s Face Detection API. "Brining the butterlies back to online dating."  haha, I saw a lot of eyes lit up in the room with that remark.
  2. Ayni is building an app for global language and cultural exchange using Haven OnDemand’s Speech Recognition API to facilitate live transcription of speech to text.
  3. Social Capital delivers social intelligence to the workplace with Haven OnDemand’s concept and entity extraction APIs.

All of these teams, now startups, were discovered through Haveon OnDemand's global hackathon program - how neat is that?

The conference bell just chimmed, that is a wrap for the HPE Advanced Analytics World Tour Silicon Valley. Time to celebrate! The next touring city is Singapore on March 23.

Cheers,

Jenn
