Notes on Golden Steer’s opening date

Golden Steer is located in what was originally called the Lucky Shopping Center, built in 1960. This aerial photo from Aug. 16, 1960 shows the complex under construction. Golden Steer Steakhouse opened later in 1962 according to family of original co-owner Rex Littleton, and public records including newspapers and business directories.  

History of Golden Steer, est. 1962

Below are newspaper articles charting the history of the property, and of different claims for the opening date of Golden Steer.


1. Las Vegas Review-Journal, Dec. 14, 1960. Lucky Shopping Center (308-332 W San Francisco Ave) was built and opened in 1960. Golden Steer is not mentioned among the original tenants, nor found in any public directories, phone books, news in 1960-1961, or prior. Valentino’s restaurant was located in the shopping center.


2. Las Vegas Review-Journal, Nov. 10, 1960. This article details the opening of Valentino’s restaurant at Lucky Shopping Center.


3. Las Vegas Review-Journal, Jan. 10, 1962. Earliest reference found to Golden Steer restaurant in print: “the recently opened Golden Steer.” Golden Steer listed in the phone book beginning in 1962. (The name San Francisco Ave was changed to Sahara Ave in 1962.)


4. Las Vegas Israelite of Nevada, June 25, 1971. Advertisement: “Our 11th year” [1960]. This ad ran for several years with the “11th year” text never changing.


5. Las Vegas Review-Journal, April 11, 1989. Article: “since opening in 1970…”


6. Las Vegas Review-Journal, Sep. 21, 1990. Article: “opened on the strip some 39 years ago [1951], then moved to its new location at 308 W Sahara in 1961”


7. Las Vegas Review-Journal, Feb. 10, 1998. Advertisement: “Our 40th anniversary … Tradition in fine dining since 1958.”
