Today I connected to a long-running process in tmux over ssh for work, to find that the pane the process was running in seems to have started using the wrong character encoding for its output, leading to the unreadable mess in the code block below. The process itself is clearly still running fine, the output is color-coded and exactly matches the format it should be, and output files are being created without issue, so it's clear that there's still valid information being processed overall, and only the display to the terminal is messed up.

Without killing this process (which has been running for days at this point, and doesn't have the ability to gracefully resume from where it left off), how can I reset the character encoding tmux is using (presumably to UTF-8, or anything else ASCII compatible, there should be very few, if any, characters that aren't in the ASCII range)?

Additionally, what output of my script (which is processing documents, and may occasionally produce unwanted/unexpected character outputs), might have triggered this issue to begin with?

I'd also be interested if anyone can identify the character set that it's using, it seems to have the same characters for capital letters and numbers (except '0') as ASCII does, so that helps narrow it down

• The program is running in Python 3, and using normal print() calls to output to the terminal.
• ANSI escape sequences for color codes are behaving correctly, all the output is colored exactly as expected.
