We’ve fined Monzo Bank Ltd £21,091,300 for its inadequate anti-financial crime systems and controls between October 2018 and August 2020. Monzo also repeatedly breached a requirement preventing it from opening accounts for high-risk customers between August 2020 and June 2022. Banks are a vital line of defence in the collective fight against financial crime. Fraud is a shared challenge, and one we can tackle together. This was very much the focus of yesterday’s Bridging & Development Lenders Association (BDLA) Fraud Prevention Summit, where Christopher Taylor spoke about the importance of collective responsibility in addressing fraud in the sector. As Chris demonstrated, fraud is real, it's happening, but with the right tools and awareness, the industry is well positioned to mitigate the risk. The UK government is scrapping the Payment Systems Regulator (PSR) and rolling its role into the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). On paper, this cuts complexity and makes life easier for fintechs and merchants. But here’s the bigger question…without a dedicated payments regulator, does the market risk losing focus on competition, access, and fraud prevention - areas where the PSR had real impact? Competition keeps fees fair, access ensures fintechs / smaller banks can connect to core payment systems on a level playing field, and fraud prevention protects consumers from scams and financial loss. My take: the real differentiator won’t be who regulates, but how firms build trust. With rules like APP (Authorised Push Payment) fraud reimbursement, biometric authentication, and safeguarding of customer funds, trust is what will set winners apart. First Enterprise - Enterprise Loans has launched a £13 million lending fund aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the UK that are unable to access finance from traditional banks and high street lenders.
