Daryl Lawson shared thisWhy your open rate is probably lying to you. If your cold email tool is showing an open rate above 60%, your real open rate is probably closer to 30%. Microsoft's security layer. Mimecast. Proofpoint. Most enterprise email protection systems pre-scan emails before they reach the recipient. When they scan, they trigger the tracking pixel — your tool reports an ""open"" that no human has seen. These bot opens look identical to real opens in most dashboards. The only way to tell them apart is pattern detection: opens firing within 10 seconds of delivery, at 3am local time, or repeatedly from the same network. Why this matters operationally: Most cold email optimisation is done against open rate. Subject line A/B tests. Send time analysis. List quality comparisons. If the metric you're optimising against is inflated by bots, you're making decisions on noise. Every one of my campaigns filters bot opens before reporting. The real open rate sits in the 30–40% range consistently, which matches what actual human inbox behaviour produces. If you're running outbound and haven't checked your open rate filtering, it's worth doing. You might discover your subject lines don't perform the way you thought they did — or that your send timing does more work than the raw numbers suggest. If you've paid an agency £3,000–£7,000 a month for outbound and wondered what the technology behind the service actually is — the answer is often nothing special. They're typically running the same £30–£100/month tools anyone can buy. Instantly. Smartlead. Apollo. Plus a team of junior staff or VAs clicking buttons. You're paying for labour, not technology. The giveaway when you're evaluating an agency: Ask specifically whether they own the platform your campaigns run on, or whether they resell someone else's. Ask what their reply classification system is and whether it's automated or manual. Ask what their deliverability monitoring looks like at the infrastructure level. If the answers are vague, you're looking at a labour-for-markup business. If the answers are specific, you're looking at something closer to an operational tech provider. Both can work. But the pricing should reflect what you're actually buying. Paying agency prices for DIY tool access isn't a great trade. I'm not saying every cold email agency is bad. Plenty do good work. Daryl Lawson shared thisMost B2B businesses think they need more leads. They don't. I have the same conversation weekly. A founder, partner, or MD says some version of: ""We need more leads."" Almost always, when I dig in, leads isn't the actual problem. The real issues are usually one of three things. First — pipeline predictability. Referrals are brilliant when they come, but they come in clusters. Feast or famine. What most businesses actually need isn't more leads; it's a consistent flow of new conversations that doesn't depend on who happened to refer someone that month. Second — quality of fit. Most businesses generating ""leads"" from Google Ads, content downloads, or purchased lists end up with a pile of contacts that don't match their ideal client. Chasing volume of the wrong audience is worse than chasing quality of the right one. Third — time-to-conversation. Traditional lead generation often means someone fills in a form, you send them a nurture sequence, they eventually book a call three months later. For businesses with urgency, that's too slow. Managed outbound solves a different problem than ""more leads"". It solves pipeline predictability, fit quality, and time-to-conversation simultaneously — by proactively reaching specific target accounts rather than hoping they find you. If what you actually need is predictable conversations with decision-makers in a specific market, that's a different conversation than ""more leads"". Daryl Lawson shared thisThe honest problem with every 'AI SDR' platform I've looked at. I've evaluated most of the AI SDR platforms that have launched in the last 18 months. AiSDR. Artisan. 11x. A handful of others. The pitch is always the same: fully autonomous outbound, AI does everything, your sales team gets out of the way. The reality in every case I've seen is different. All of them still need significant human oversight — defining ICPs, writing the positioning, reviewing messaging, managing deliverability when it drifts. Most users I've spoken to have 2–3 people functionally managing the platform. The bigger issue is where the value sits. The AI in these platforms is mostly API calls to the same underlying models — Claude, GPT, others. Everyone has access to the same intelligence. The differentiator isn't the AI. The differentiator is operational execution: list quality, deliverability management, copy that matches the specific buyer's business, reply handling, ongoing optimisation across campaigns. That's what actually determines whether outbound works. Buying an AI SDR platform without the operational layer is like buying a car without an engine. It looks right in the showroom.
