‘The combination of individually designed stations and the design of the underground areas that characterises the entire subway line sets a new standard for the Tube.’ The latest edition of Bauwelt spotlights the architectural achievement of the Elizabeth Line following the project being awarded the 2024 RIBA Stirling Prize, ‘a rare example of an infrastructure project being recognised at an architectural level.’ The article highlights how the line-wide approach ‘achieved a clever fusion of technology and architectural design’, with 240-metre platforms and 'shrink wrapped' curved glass-fibre-reinforced concrete cladding, the design prioritizes what matters most - the passenger experience: ‘How can we make the experience human for the passengers? How can we ensure that the space does not feel claustrophobic, but is perceived as a pleasant place where one enjoys being?’ Read more here → https://lnkd.in/gYXGYuRq Working across the Elizabeth line the line-wide design team of Grimshaw, Maynard Design Consultancy, AtkinsRéalis and EQUATION Lighting Design was part of a wider Crossrail architectural design team, interfacing with architects across the line’s10 new stations including John McAslan + Partners, Weston Williamson, Hawkins\Brown, AHR (formerly Aedas), WilkinsonEyre, BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd), Adamson Associates Architects, Allies and Morrison and Fereday Pollard. #ElizabethLine #Bauwelt #RIBAStirlingPrize #PublicTransport #UrbanDesign #Infrastructure

Breaking The Housing Finance Cycle Why does housing feel permanently unaffordable, not just in one country but internationally? In this episode, Tim Williams speaks with Josh Ryan-Collins, Professor at UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), following a recent outline planning approval that could mark a broader turning point in the system. Josh is a respected voice on housing and finance and the author of Rethinking the Economics of Land and Housing, listed by the Financial Times as a top economics book. His work challenges how we understand land, credit, and affordability. Tim and Josh explore the connections between planning decisions, mortgage systems, and central bank policies. Rather than offering quick solutions, this conversation opens up deeper questions about how we value place, purpose, and the structures that shape our cities. It’s a green light for the first phase of Golden Valley, the landmark scheme being delivered by Henry Boot Development in partnership with Cheltenham Borough Council. The masterplan, designed by Grimshaw, will support the development of the UK's largest cyber security innovation district, and the first phase includes around 1 million sq ft of commercial space and 576 new homes. The masterplan sets the ambition for a regenerative community, set within a mosaic of native landscapes habitats, truly sustainable transport and movement infrastructure, and low-carbon mixed-use neighbourhoods with distinctive characters. It will eventually provide around 2,500 new homes, 1.25million sq ft of commercial space with the National Cyber Innovation Centre at its heart. And existing waterways, landscape habitats, ecology, biodiversity, and soil will be left in better shape than when they were found, for a community inherently incentivised to continue to sustainably grow. #GoldenValley #Innovation #FutureTech

'The future of British transport briefly exchanges glances with its industrial past.' In the latest edition of the Concrete Quarterly (The Concrete Centre) Chris Patience talks about the design and delivery of the HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd Colne Valley Viaduct in the UK. 'We wanted the structure to be responsive to the different contexts. Over water, maximising the views through the landscape by creating really wide spans. But in the dense woodland, straighter piers push the structure up above the canopy, maximising clearance below.' Now structurally complete, with an assembly that required its own on-site precast factory the Viaduct is ready to support the structural demands of future high-speed trains, but also distinctively responds to its landscape setting with elegance — 'a cohesive architecture form measured in kilometres rather than metres.' Read more here → https://lnkd.in/ej3w9BYc The Align JV (Bouygues Travaux Publics, VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd, Sir Robert McAlpine) with @Grimshaw, Rendel Ingerop Pty Ltd, Jacobs and LDA Design, was appointed by HS2 Ltd in 2017 to lead the design and delivery of the Colne Valley Viaduct, from concept design stage through to construction on-site, including extensive community and local stakeholder engagement and multiple Schedule 17 approvals. Prior to this appointment, Knight Architects and EDP (Atkins Jacobs Sener) were commissioned by HS2 Ltd to prepare a Specimen Design which explored initial concept design themes, formed the basis for early stakeholder engagement and raised design aspirations for the project.

A Quieter Civic Centre Grimshaw is proud to share our contribution to the Eddy Avenue Plaza Renewal, Stage 1 of the broader Central Station transformation. Working alongside Transport for NSW, the Transport Asset Manager of NSW (TAM) and Sue Barnsley Design and TKD Architects, this modest yet precise intervention reframes a high-traffic civic edge as a place of movement, clarity and care. The new kiosk is not a destination. It is a civic diagram. A sheltering structure that orients without overtaking, guiding flow rather than absorbing it. Designed for rhythm, not spectacle. Placed for connection, not congestion. This is architecture as interface: calm, coded and tuned to the city’s environment. At Grimshaw, we view civic renewal not as performance but as public stewardship. The Eddy Avenue project is a small act with large consequence. It edits the street, choreographs movement and signals the next chapter of Central's renewal. Image supplied by Transport for NSW. 'The synthesis of ecological, cultural and technical considerations makes the Oman Botanic Garden one of the most complex projects in the world. It will set a benchmark for the safeguarding of our planet's precious life.' The Oman Botanic Garden is featured in the latest RIBA Journal and the journal's Gulf Issue, sharing the design story behind of what will become, when it opens, a celebration and showcase of Oman's unique landscapes and biodiversity. Grimshaw's Keith Brewis and Abhi Chauhan, spoke to the RIBA Journal about the balance between plant physiology and human comfort that has informed the design — developed with Arup — and the connection between the distinct habitats that visitors will experience. 'Our masterplan creates a necklace of buildings linked head to tail, forming an intuitive walking route.'
