Mifepristone access is headed back to the Supreme Court, and so are we ⚖️ Today, NCJW led 50+ faith organizations in an amicus brief to the Supreme Court to say: protecting religious freedom means preserving access to medication abortion — and that includes mifepristone.

Dr. Tiller’s clinic in Wichita was firebombed in 1986; he was shot in both arms in 1993–and still, he persisted in providing abortion care to those who needed it. He was murdered by another anti-abortion extremist. His memory is a blessing & yesterday’s win is an honor to him.

To be clear: Despite what Politico is reporting tonight, Roe has not been overturned and abortion is still legal in the United States. While the draft opinion that Politico shared tonight is not official, the language is upsetting, shocking, and outrageous.

🧵 As everyone talks about abortion this week, we thought it might be helpful to review some best practices with regards to language from the repro field & share some other definitions that might be useful. 1/x Thread.

Abortion is permitted in Judaism, & it's required if the wellbeing of the pregnant person is at risk. Medication abortion isn’t new, even if it’s taken different forms over the centuries. Access saves lives. It preserves dignity. It honors agency. Access is the path to justice.
The 17th c. Rabbi Yehudah ibn Ayyash of Algiers was asked if women who make a medication known to terminate a child were acting according to jewish law--he replied that they should continue to self-manage their own abortions without interference. ABORTION ACCESS IS A JEWISH VALUE

BREAKING: #SCOTUS overturns Roe v. Wade — This decision is a horrific violation of human and civil rights, and will cause immeasurable harm to millions who have just lost access to safe and legal health care. We grieve, but we are not giving up.

Judaism teaches that abortion is permitted, and, when the health of the pregnant person is in danger, it is required. Because the life of the pregnant person comes first. Abortion is a religious freedom issue. #AbortionIsEssential

Instead of: “Women” Say: “People who need abortion access,” or “people who need abortion care.” Why? Some women don’t need abortion access, & some trans men, some nonbinary & some gender nonconforming people do. “People” is more accurate and inclusive.

Instead of: “Safe, Legal and Rare” Say: “Support abortion access” Why? Demanding that abortion be “rare” stigmatizes those who do have abortions.

“In Jewish tradition, abortion is permitted and sometimes required. And so it’s very important that from a faith perspective we speak out and counter a narrative that sometimes says abortion and faith don’t go together. It’s simply not true,” Katz said. bit.ly/3nIjbyq

Instead of: “Pro-Choice” Say: “Pro-abortion access” or “abortion justice.” Why? Not everyone has the same choices around abortion; “pro-choice” flattens issues of access, & how immigration, poverty, racism, incarceration, & other issues impact people’s reproductive lives.

As neo-Nazis plan a day of hate targeted at Jews across the country this Shabbat, we — alongside our allies and partners — are here to bring the light, together.
