This is your check-in post for today. The poll will be open from midnight Universal or Zulu Time (8pm Eastern Time) on Thursday, July 16, to midnight on Friday, July 17 (8pm Eastern Time).
Due to an issue in which I did not receive an email potentially being more widespread than just the one person, for all unmatchables, I have given the remaining participants with no potential recipient a placeholder assignment.
If you were in the initial unmatchables group and want to participate and I did not get your email expanding your offers, or even if you just did not see the email in time, please comment here or on one of the pinch hit posts or DM this account with the recipient you would like to be matched to (or with a list if you have a Dreamwidth account to receive comment replies and you would like me to choose for you), and I will manually track your assignment.
Initial pinch hits to go out in 20-24 hours, I believe.
All comments on this post should be screened. Please let me know if there is an issue with your assignment.
This afternoon the smoke from the Canadian wild fires has made it Pittsburgh over 250 miles away. I'm asthmatic. I'm now tight chested and wheezy. I feel so bad for anyone in more of a direct line of these fires and the smoke.
It's been a wild ride of a day. I had to go back to the dealership because their car dude forgot Ohio had front plates and they didn't give it to me (and I didn't notice). While I was over there Mom and I went to this branch of Wesbanco to put my money in a moneymarket to earn interest. Only its .05 apr. WTF?!? No thanks. It's not worth changing everything for that. She agreed. Why do you even have something that sad?
From there it was off to Primanti Brothers for yummy sandwiches and the off to the casino Mom and I went.
Was losing. Found a samurai themed one, lost another ten bucks, hit the free spin bonus, tons of wilds, long story short, I won nearly 700$. Woo hoo!
Wheezing my way thru the happy dance.
And since some of you wanted to see my Home Goods Haul, here you go
1. I finished the last of that Star Wars puzzle multi-pack. The limited color pallette of this one made it not as fun as the others, especially when I was down to nothing but Vader's cape lol. I did enjoy it, though, and now the whole set is out in the Little Library for someone else to enjoy.
2. I am still sick, though definitely feeling better than yesterday if for no other reason than I actually got a fair amount of sleep last night. I did wake up more than usual, both due to congestion and the heat, but feel much more rested, and in general my symptoms seem to be improving. I will probably mask up and go in to work tomorrow (with how runny my nose was yesterday, masking was definitely not an option, even if I had felt safe to drive after no sleep, which I didn't).
3. Sidecar announced yet another new seasonal flavor. Actually they announced it yesterday after I'd already eaten breakfast, and I stopped in there after Shake Shack, since it's just a block away, but they were temporarily out and said it would be another 15-20 minutes, so I didn't stick around. I got one this morning, though, and it was so good! It's mango sticky rice, and it has a little ball of actual sticky rice in the center of the donut, as well as some puffed rice on top (and mango of course). They're known for their huckleberry donuts (which are also delicious) and now offer huckleberry foam on any drink, so I got a cold brew with the foam and that was very tasty, too. (Hopefully early enough in the morning it doesn't keep me up tonight.)
4. Carla is on the train home. She should be arriving in LA early Saturday morning.

Editor's Note: If your item was not linked, it's because the header lacked the information that we like to give our readers. Please at least give the title, rating, and pairing or characters, and please include the header in the storypost itself, not just in the linking post. Spoiler warnings are also greatly appreciated. Thank you!
WILLOW: Hey, Buffy, this might be a good time to mention that someone, so not me, spilled something purply on your new peasant top which I would never borrow without asking. Still love me?
BUFFY: Uh-huh.
(Willow and Tara look at each other and laugh.)
(Buffy ponders for a moment, then looks at Willow.)
BUFFY: Huh? What about my peasant top?
WILLOW: Nothin'.

The sky isn't quite so orange today, but apparently the particulate count is higher so it's more dangerous. The farmers market cancelled because they don't want people outside. I decided to follow their lead and cancelled my own plans to go outside because yikes.
My dad ended up being admitted to the hospital for tests, but he's already doing much better in the air-conditioned environment. The forecast is saying the wind is going to change tomorrow and carry the smoke away from us so he might be able to go home then. (And in August he and his wife will be moving into a condo, so I can stop worrying about smoke, stairs, stoves, and every other thing.)
Last night I wrote about 700+ words of people arguing. Apparently channeling all my mad at politicians can be useful for something creative!
July 16th is International Drag Day! We’ve put together a list of our favorite books featuring characters who do drag, non-fiction about people who do drag, and books written by people who do drag. Drag is not just “people who dress in clothes not conventionally associated with their gender”; it is a specific culture, so our list takes that into account, but we had to make some calls on what would and wouldn’t count. The contributors to the list are: CarCrash, Linnea Peterson, E. C., Nina Waters, Annabeth Lynch, hullosweetpea, Evangeline Giaconia and 3 anonymous contributors.
According to the eBird newsletter, July is the least active birdwatching month. This makes sense to me from a North American perspective, since spring migration is over and fall migration hasn't started yet, and a lot of species are less active/visible/audible as their breeding activity is winding down. Not to mention in a lot of places it's very hot and people may be less excited about going outside. Vermont summers aren't too hot but we do get a lot of thunderstorms. I've been getting out there when I can, but I haven't added any new species to my year list since my last update.
What I have been seeing a lot of are the babies in our yard.
This little boy is a juvenile Hairy Woodpecker, with red on the top of his head. When he gets his adult plumage the red will only appear on the back of his head. He has a sister, but I can't really distinguish her from their mom anymore now that she's more independent and doesn't follow the parents around begging for food. We've also had a juvenile male Downy Woodpecker who looks the same but smaller.
A Tufted Titmouse pair have also fledged at least two young in our yard. The babies really make a racket! The Black-capped Chickadees have fledglings too and have been very active shuttling food to them from the feeders. I've also seen a very put-upon adult Blue Jay with two screamy juveniles. They don't have fully formed crests yet and they're kind of grayish on the back, but you don't really need the plumage to tell that they're kids; they follow their parent around with mouths wide open, demanding to be fed!
After about a month of daily sightings, our juvenile Northern Cardinal seems to have moved on. I did see it a couple of times in a tree a bit further away from the feeders where the parents hang out, so I'm guessing it's left to find its own territory. They grow up so fast!
Something random that amused me: eBird now allows you to attach non-bird photos to your reports—other animals you saw, scenery, habitat, and so on. I was uploading some pictures, and noticed one was not publicly displayed because it was "flagged as containing people." It was this one.
This is Song Kang’s new drama that starts airing August 29 on Netflix. It’s about two gifted pianists and rivals that study in an elite arts high school for musical prodigies. And let me tell you, they definitely court BL audiences hard. There is the third main character – a girl, but you wouldn’t know that from the official teasers.
And the teaser from two weeks ago is even more suggestive. They practice together, they smile at each other with so much love in their eyes, their even sleep in the subway pressed close together with heads falling on each other's shoulders. And that teaser ends with the words, “Prelude: the moment our fingers touch.”
It would so cool if there was something more between them than friendship, but I know it will be just another annoying love triangle again. I still want to try it, maybe the subtext will be entertaining enough for me to watch it all. We’ll see.
The light is weirdly yellow from the smoke and the latter's irritating me even inside. The local air quality's listed between Very Unhealthy and Dangerous, depending on which weather website I'm looking at. I'm glad I have KN95 masks.
