“Cheer up, David,” Hotch encouraged as he gently pushed Rossi’s drink closer to the man, “It…It was bound to happen and now it has. It’s over. Time to move on.”

“And you were only out for about 2.8 seconds so, you know, it’s not like you’ll have to worry about any permanent damage,” Reid chimed in from across the table.

“Is this you helping?” Rossi asked before downing his Manhattan in one large swallow, “Because you’re rather terrible at it.”

Reid gave a frown and Hotch sighed, “Reid, how about you go get us some more drinks? The service here has been less than stellar, going direct to the bar might be more effective.” That and Hotch got the sense Reid might just end up irritating Rossi further, however unintended.

Reid nodded and got up from his side of the booth just as Prentiss was heading over with a tall glass of ice. “No ice packs, of course,” she announced, her tone letting them know just how annoyed she was with this bar, as she slid into the booth that Reid just exited, “but we can improvise. How’s your eye?”

Rossi gave a sour look, “Puffy and in pain. Of course, you get decked in the eye and that’ll happen.”

The female agent gave a sympathetic look before finally asking the question everyone on the team had wanted to, “What happened, anyway?”

“David ran into a familiar face,” Hotch answered simply, wanting to spare Rossi having to answer himself but, obviously, not wanting to tell the story for Rossi either.

“Ex-girlfriend?” Prentiss offered, finding it the most logical possibility, as she worked to wrap a series of napkins around the entire glass of ice.

“Yes and no,” Rossi confessed before giving a sigh, “The husband of an ex-girlfriend.”

“Ah,” Prentiss nodded some to show she understood before handing over the now wrapped glass to him, “so he didn’t take too kindly to you getting there first, huh?”

Hotch gave a surprised look at how casually Prentiss asked her question, though he smiled seeing it made his old friend finally laugh some.

Rossi took the glass and set it carefully against his swollen eye, still laughing, “He also didn’t take too kindly to my trying to get there with his college-grad daughter, which in fact is how I first caught his eye.”

“David!” Hotch blurted out in surprise, unable to control himself as this new bit of information was revealed.

“Like you said, Aaron, bound to happen.” Rossi stated almost seriously before letting out a small chuckle with Prentiss. The amusement gained from his straight-laced friend's outburst alone made the whole event that much more tolerable.
