1) Looks like this obsession with identifying people online is spreading to all sorts of places. I've been working with two survey companies for a long time for some extra cash. One of them recently prompted users to verify their accounts, offering better opportunities if they did. The other unexpectedly asked me to set up verification to access my account, which included uploading ID and revealing other information.

This is an account I've had for over 20 years. No matter what age I was when I opened it, I would clearly be of age since, and I have contacted customer service various times in the past due to problems. They know I'm a real person who has almost always accessed them from the same IP. I even had "diamond status", meaning I got extra points with each survey completed for faster rewards, as a result of being such a longtime member.

Apparently that was unimportant. I closed my account and they have not contacted me. Makes me wonder how many other people are doing so as well.

On our Saturday post [personal profile] solenne mentioned the upcoming loss of TV Time, which is used for tracking shows to watch. Given all the networks or streamers in use, this has become complicated to do.

What method(s) or service(s) work for you? How transferable is your data? Have your tools/habits changed over time? What problems have you run into?

On to the Round of 16!

1) Finally the apartment is done. The maintenance guys never showed up yesterday and I called the property manager this morning to see if we were on the list. Thankfully they came within the hour. They had various things to reinstall, and also helped me put the major furniture back in place.

I think the apartment was some 8 degrees cooler inside once the blinds were up (since I added our solar curtains). Celebrated by breaking out a jigsaw puzzle and spending a relaxing afternoon doing that and catching up on World Cup games.

An article about declining representation of LGBTQ+ characters on TV noted “We saw this huge peak of queer characters in 2022, and since then we’ve seen a reduction in making programs overall. The market was totally bloated, but because we’re in very uncertain financial times, programmers become much more conservative and go for things that have that mass-market appeal. In general, people think mass-market appeal doesn’t equal complex, queer shows.”

Have you also felt there’s a representational decline or is it just the ebb and flow of storylines and new show development? Are there particular shows or characters with queer representation that you miss? If so, which characters or shows would you most like to see return?

HOW many games?

1) I found this article about the New Sobriety movement of interest. As someone who's had maybe a dozen slushy cocktails in my life, the idea of having them without alcohol sounds like a real plus. I am glad, though, that there's a health movement afoot to label alcohol as the risky substance it is. But apparently sometimes addictive behavior just finds a new outlet.

2) While I'm sure FIFA decided to expand World Cup participants for financial reasons, I was pleased that so many more countries would be able to watch their players represent them on the world stage, and relish the victories, however they came. But the group stage always tends to lead to exhaustion and this is even more true with so many more games. I'm quite ready for this stage to be over. This six games a day thing is just crazy.

Folks may have noticed that the site has been slow for logged-out users over the last while. This is partly because we separate traffic by logged-in, "logged out but have visited the site before", and "logged out, never visited the site before" and assign the fewest resources to the last category (because we're pretty confident the overwhelming majority of it is bot and scraper traffic, even if it's often impossible to say for sure). The flood of garbage traffic is a plague and a scourge the entire internet is dealing with, and it's hitting small sites the hardest as operators get better and better at cloaking their requests to look like real, authentic use. We long ago hit the point where adding more resources is a possible solution (because they just eat them up as soon as we do), and splitting traffic lets us keep the site usable for our actual users without wasting too much server power on garbage.

We've now, lucky us, reached the point where the "logged out, have never visited the site before" path is just flooded all the time, and the "logged out but have visited the site before" path is suffering some of the overflow. We've made some changes to the routing to try to improve things for logged out users who have visited the site before and keep it at "it may be a little bit slow, but at least it works" instead of "it keeps timing out", and we've seen some improvements, but if you're accustomed to browsing the site while logged out, I'm really sorry but it may continue to be a little miserable.

You will get the fastest page loads and the best performance by browsing the site logged in. If you are having trouble loading the front page to log in, bookmark the direct login page. We can't route the front page to the "more power" server pool, because it's a common target for garbage traffic, but we've switched /login over to "more power" and we'll try to keep it there as long as we can unless it starts getting slammed, too.
