Based on our Meghalaya trips, Cherrapunji is the destination where families usually spend the most time taking photographs—not because of one attraction, but because every few kilometres the scenery changes completely.
Unlike many destinations where sightseeing ends after visiting two or three places, Cherrapunji offers a full day of exploration without ever feeling repetitive.
Our recommendation is to stay here for at least two nights, especially if you wish to include the Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek.
Why We Recommend Staying Instead of Taking a Day Trip
One mistake we often see is travellers staying in Shillong and trying to cover Cherrapunji as a day excursion.
While it's technically possible, it turns into a very long day with nearly 6–7 hours of driving, leaving very little time to actually enjoy the attractions.
We've found that staying in Cherrapunji completely changes the experience.
You can start early, avoid the crowds, enjoy the sunrise over the valleys, and explore at a much more relaxed pace.
1. Nohkalikai Falls
If there is one postcard image that represents Meghalaya, it's undoubtedly Nohkalikai Falls.
Plunging from a height of approximately 1,115 feet, it is India's tallest plunge waterfall.
During October and November, the waterfall remains incredibly powerful after the monsoon, while the turquoise pool below becomes clearly visible on sunny days.
The viewpoint is only a short walk from the parking area, making it accessible for almost everyone.
