🖊OPINION | US Imperialism Enters a New Stage: The Left Needs to Take a Close Look at It

Steve Ellner takes stock of a new stage of US imperialism and the role of the Left in challenging its advance.

The column states that US foreign policy has placed Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba in a “de facto state of war,” marked by sanctions, military measures, and enforcement actions. It cites the January 3, 2026 kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores, alongside expanded US monitoring and interdiction of oil shipments.

At the same time, it argues that the Left must reassess its analysis, give greater weight to resistance against US aggression, and frame its criticism of governments within the context of sustained external pressure.

📰 NEWS | Venezuelan Gov’t Maintains Frozen Minimum Wage, Hikes Bonuses on May Day

Venezuela’s government announced an increase in the “integral minimum income” for public sector workers to $240 per month, achieved through higher bonuses rather than a rise in the base minimum wage, which remains frozen at 130 bolívares (~$0.27).

The adjustment includes a $200 monthly “economic war bonus” and a $40 food subsidy. Meanwhile, Labor Minister Carlos Castillo confirmed that discussions are ongoing with trade unions and business associations over potential labor law reforms.

The measures have sparked protests from unions, which argue that bonus-based income policies weaken wages and labor rights.

📰 NEWS | Venezuela Reasserts Essequibo Sovereignty Claim at ICJ Hearing

Venezuela reaffirmed its sovereignty claim over the Essequibo region during hearings at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Venezuelan representative Samuel Moncada said Caracas does not recognize the ICJ’s jurisdiction and argued that the 1966 Geneva Agreement remains the only valid framework for resolving the dispute with Guyana.

Guyana, which brought the case before the ICJ in 2018, argued that the controversy affects more than 70% of its territory. The hearings are scheduled to continue through May 11, while a final ruling could take months or years.

Venezuelan Attorney General Larry Devoe has opened an investigation into the death of Victor Hugo Quero Navas, who died in custody in July 2025 at Rodeo I prison near Caracas. Authorities said he died from acute respiratory failure after being hospitalized with gastrointestinal bleeding.

🗒️🗣️ INTERVIEW | Adelmo Becerra: ‘It Is Essential to Defend Labor Rights Against Regressive Reform’

In the latest VA interview, Venezuelan trade union representative Adelmo Becerra explains that the government’s May 1 measures continue recent labor policies by increasing non-wage bonuses while leaving the minimum wage unchanged. He notes that the growing use of bonuses instead of salaries weakens severance pay, social security contributions, and collective bargaining protections.

“It is essential at this moment to have a united force with a specific agenda: to fight for the restoration of wages, for the reopening of collective bargaining negotiations, for the release of unjustly imprisoned workers and trade unionists, and to defend labor rights against regressive reform efforts,” Becerra states.

He also warns that proposed labor reforms could reduce historic labor rights amid the ongoing economic crisis and US sanctions.

The governments of Venezuela and the United States, together with the United Kingdom and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), completed the extraction and transfer of 13.5 kilograms of uranium enriched above 20% from Venezuela’s obsolete RV-1 research reactor.

The material, stored since the reactor’s closure in 1991, was transported from Miranda state to Puerto Cabello and then shipped to the US Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in South Carolina.

Venezuelan authorities said the January 3 US attack near the IVIC reactor facilities increased the urgency of removing the radioactive material. The IAEA confirmed it provided technical support, security guidance and oversight during the operation.

📰 NEWS | Venezuela ‘Deports’ Former Minister, Diplomatic Envoy Alex Saab to US

The Venezuelan government turned former minister and diplomatic envoy Alex Saab over to US authorities on Saturday, describing the move as the “deportation of Colombian citizen Alex Saab Morán.”

According to the official SAIME statement, the measure was adopted because Saab was “implicated in various crimes” in the US Local media reported that he was transferred from Caracas to Miami aboard a US government aircraft.

Saab had previously been returned to Venezuela in December 2023 as part of a prisoner exchange after receiving a presidential pardon from then-US President Joe Biden. During his prior detention, Saab’s legal team argued that he held Venezuelan nationality and diplomatic immunity, while Venezuela’s constitution prohibits the extradition of citizens.

The government statement did not explain the legal procedure behind Saab’s removal or why the operation was framed as a “deportation” rather than an extradition.
