Simpler by being able to handle addition and subtraction with the same mechanism (circuitry). Addition: 30 + 40 = 70 can be done by performing an addition of binary representations of +30 and +40. Subtraction: 40 - 30 = 10, can be done by performing an addition over (+40) + (-30) instead and the binary representation of (-30) can be obtained by inverting the bits of binary representation of (+30) and adding 1 to it.
